We heard “King Cotton Blues”. Here they are again with “Early In The Morning”.

This is Hairy Larry inviting you to enjoy Something Blue every Saturday night at ten. This week we’ll hear Fred Sanders, Jawbone and Jolene, John Spencer, and theCAUSE.

Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at ten, right here on KASU.

Something Blue – Cause

09-Fred_Sanders-Believe-Hey_Come_On_’Little_Girl’.wav

Jawbone_and_Jolene-Lifestyles_Of_The_Poor_And_Infamous-Baby_got_My_Back.wav

John_Spencer-Road_To_Brigadoon-Fading_Memories.wav

All right now, kicking us off was the great Fred Sanders singing “Hey Come On Little Girl” from his CD, believe. I had the pleasure of seeing Fred play at Blue Monday in Paragould. Then we heard Jawbone and Jolene do “Baby Got My Back” from their new CD, Lifestyles Of The Poor And Infamous. Jawbone blew harp with Big Red And The Soulbenders at Bluesday Tuesday. And then John Spencer did “Fading Memories” from his new CD, Road To Brigadoon. John played with the Pot Bellied Stallions at Blue Monday. On “Fading Memories” that was Mike “Zif” Lovell on lap steel and Cheryl Culp on backup vocals.

You’re listening to KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

Here’s a couple more songs from the new Jawbone and Jolene CD. First Jolene will sing “Honey Baby” and then we’ll hear Jawbone talking about how he’s “Headin For The Delta”.

Jawbone_and_Jolene-Lifestyles_Of_The_Poor_And_Infamous-Honey_Baby.wav

Jawbone_and_Jolene-Lifestyles_Of_The_Poor_And_Infamous-

Headin_For_The_Delta.wav

Oh yeah now that’s Jawbone talking about some people and places near and dear to my heart. When he’s talking about Cherry Street in Helena you know that’s the Blues.

Now here’s John Spencer and Cheryl Culp again with one of my favorites from his Road To Brigadoon CD, “Come Tomorrow I’ll Be Gone”. Then we’ll hear John sing “Blood Red Sun” featuring Addison Boling on congas.

theCAUSE-Sunshine_Daydream_Campground_2011_10_22-03_Mama_Tried.mp3

Now that’s what I’m talking about. It’s theCAUSE recorded live at the Sunshine Daydream Campground on October 22, 2011. They did a Merle Haggard song, “Mama Tried”. What a great sound. Here they are again doing Bob Dylan’s “Ballad Of A Thin Man”.

theCAUSE-Sunshine_Daydream_Campground_2011_10_22-07_Ballad_Of_A_Thin_Man.mp3

theCAUSE-Sunshine_Daydream_Campground_2011_10_22-09_You_Never_Can_Tell.mp3

Oh yeah, it’s theCAUSE singing “You Never Can Tell”. They are a jam band from Pittsburgh and they really get with it. I blog about protest music on the internet and I learned about the CAUSE when one of their band members commented on an article I wrote about “Uncle John’s Band”.

You’re listening to KASU at 91.9 FM, the home of the Blues every Saturday night broadcasting from Jonesboro, Arkansas the capital of the North Mississippi Delta and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue inviting you to visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com where you can listen to podcasts of the show anytime. Keep up with what I’m doing and with what’s happening in the Delta at deltaboogie.com. You can find out more about theCAUSE at their website, thecausejams.com and you can hear more of their music at the Live Music Archive on archive.org.

Like me, theCAUSE just loves them some Grateful Dead. Here they are now doing one of my favorite dead tunes, Franklin’s Tower.

This is Hairy Larry inviting you to enjoy Something Blue every Saturday night at ten. This week we’ll hear Jazz Alliance live at the Jonesboro Public Library.

Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at ten, right here on KASU.

Something Blue – So What

Welcome to Something Blue. Tonight we’re featuring recordings of Jazz Alliance made at the Public Library’s Fall Concert Series on September 27, 2011. Besides some great music members of the band give us a glimpse into the era of Jazz known as Bebop and Post Bop and then they end with a Swing era standard. So I’m going to turn it over to Mike Overall, on the lawn, at the Jonesboro Public Library.

01_intro.wav
02_There_Will_Never_Be_Another_You.wav
03_talk.wav
04_Recordame.wav

And that’s Jazz Alliance at the Jonesboro Public Library, Ron Horton, trumpet; Craig Collison, vibes; David Eckert, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. We heard “There Will Never Be Another You” and “Recordame”. Great music recorded for Something Blue right here in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org.

Please visit the Something Blue website at http://sbblues.com where you can find out more about the show, read the scripts, and listen to podcasts anytime. Lots of great music there, mostly live recordings, many of them recorded in Northeast Arkansas featuring real music by real people that you know.

Just like tonight featuring Jazz Alliance. Ron Horton and Craig Collison teach at ASU and David Eckert and Mike Overall work at the Public Library. Our intro and outtro music is “Blues In A Hurry” from the Jazz Alliance CD, Partly Cloudy.

The rest of the recordings we’re playing tonight were part of the Public Library’s Fall Concert Series. I’m going to let Ron introduce these next two songs, Au Privave and Black Orpheus.

05_talk.wav
06_Au_Privave.wav
07_talk.wav
08_Black_Orpheus.wav

—–

Ok, we’re back at the Public Library with Jazz Alliance. Here’s Ron Horton with a little quiz for all you music lovers at home.

09_talk.wav
10_Someday_Your_Prince_Will_Come.wav
11_talk.wav
12_It_Could_Happen_To_You.wav

Oh yeah, what a great concert. There’s no music like live music and I have to thank everyone at the Jonesboro Public Library who worked so hard to provide us with this quality entertainment. Tonight we’re listening to Jazz Alliance recorded on September 27, 2011. We heard “Someday Your Prince Will Come” and “It Could Happen To You”.

You’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. You can friend me or message me on Facebook or on the Delta Boogie Network at http://deltaboogie.net. I also run the Delta Boogie website at http://deltaboogie.com where I post photos of many of the shows I record and link to the music. The concert you’re listening to tonight is hosted at the Live Music Archive at http://archive.org.

Whether you call it Modal, Post Bop, or Cool Jazz, Miles Davis revolutionized the Jazz World with his Kind Of Blue album. We’re going to hear Jazz Alliance play Miles’ song “So What”. Then they will end their show with a swing number, “Take The A Train” by Duke Ellington. Now here’s a real Jazz expert, Mike Overall, introducing the songs.

13_talk.wav
14_So_What.wav
16_Take_The_A_Train.wav

I used Ron Horton’s song “Blues In A Hurry” from the Jazz Alliance Partly cloudy CD for intro and outtro music on this show. I’m including the entire track in the podcast.

————

Over The Hill Gang-2011_07_28-God_Bless_The_Child-kasu.wav

All right now, that’s Day Arnault singing “God Bless The Child” with the Over The Hill Gang, A Dixieland Jazz Group from Jonesboro, Arkansas. They kicked the show tonight with another great Blues called “Stuff”.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org.

Now that’s what I’m talking about, the Over The Hill Gang doing Jazz standards associated with all time great, Louis Armstrong. That was his big hit, “Hello Dolly” and before that we heard “Basin Street Blues”.

Some songs transcend genres. Here’s Day Arnault, again, singing the crossover classic “Georgia”.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. The Over The Hill Gang is laying the Dixieland on us. Recorded at KASU’s Jazz Thursday on July 28, 2011, we heard “Sentimental Journey”, Sweet Georgia Brown”, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”, and “When The Saints Go Marching In”.

Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at ten, right here on KASU.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. It’s Billy Jones Bluez recorded live at Bluesday Tuesday at the Newport Country Club on August 9, 2011. The band plays Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Rock, and as you will hear they even play some Country music.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org.

These next three songs demonstrate the versatility of this band. First the Country Soul classic, “Rainy Night In Georgia”, then we’ll hear the Elmore James Blues, “It Hurts Me Too”, followed by a Prince song, “I’m A Star”.

Oh yeah, it’s Billy Jones Bluez and they’ve got the Blues, for you. That was “Homeboy”. Before that Billy proved he had country chops singing a medley of “Old Habits”, “You Never Even Called Me By My Name”, and “Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”.

Closing the show here’s another country song, “Outlaw’s Reward” followed by an original Blues song, “At Da’ Crossroads”. Proof once again that there’s no music like live music, here’s Billy Jones Bluez.

This is Hairy Larry inviting you to enjoy Something Blue every Saturday night at ten. This week we’ll hear The Emporium Orkestra recorded at The King Biscuit Blues Festival.

Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at ten, right here on KASU.

Something Blue – Beedle

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0754a_As_The_Crow_Flies.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the Blues, for you.

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0740_Made_In_The_Shade.wav
musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0749_I_Got_A_Rich_Mans_Woman.wav

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Colin Taylor singing with the Emporium Orkestra recorded at Bunky’s on Cherry Street in Helena, Arkansas during the King Biscuit Blues Festival. The songs I’m playing tonight were recorded on Thursday, October 7, 2010. The Emporium Orkestra hosts a true acoustic open stage Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings every year during The Biscuit. Everyone is welcome to come and play. We do mostly Blues and Jug Band Music but we’ve been known to do Country, Gospel, and Rock.

Will Taylor is a friend of mine from Little Rock, Arkansas, and he came to Helena, camped at the campground, and played with us all three mornings. Here he is now doing “Prodigal Son”.

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0759_Prodigal_Son.wav

Oh yeah, that’s Will Taylor singing a Mississippi John Hurt song, “Louis Collins”. It’s the Emporium Orkestra for the whole show tonight and I promise we will get into our Jug Band repertoire later in the show.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org.

You can hear podcasts of the show, anytime, at the Something Blue website, http://sbblues.com. Friend and message some of our featured artists on The Delta Boogie Network at http://deltaboogie.net. And don’t forget about the Jazz Thursday website at http://reverbnation.com/jazzthursday.

And you can find out more about the Emporiumn Orkestra on The Delta Boogie Network. Most of the musicians camp at the Fireman’s Campground for the festival and can be found singing around the campfire late at night. We also get performances from some of the buskers or street musicians and often from Festival acts like Dave Riley, The Mississippi Spoonman, or Gary Sloan.

Now here’s Will Taylor again with a story song called “Baptist Girl”.

All right now, it’s Hairy Larry and Will Taylor doing a Dylan song, “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right”.

Rhode Island Red is one of the musician’s who makes it happen at Bunky’s year after year. He travels in from Rhode Island every year for The Biscuit. I met him playing music in the Fireman’s Campground. He brings a lot of Jug Band Music to the stage and you know what they say, “It sounds so sweet”. Here he is now doing “KC Moan”.

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0771_KC_Moan.wav

—–

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0777_Going_Down_The_Road_Feeling_Bad.wav

Oh yeah, it’s Rhode Island Red and he’s “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad”. Before that we heard the Washboard Sam song “Diggin’ My Potatos”. Washboard Sam was raised in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and he wrote many standard Blues tunes. That’s Red on the kazoo.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org. KASU is the home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas every Saturday night.

You can hear podcasts of the show anytime at the Something Blue website, http://sbblues.com.

These next two songs feature Rhode Island Red and Will Taylor. Listen closely, it’s hard to believe this is the first time these two played together. Here we go now with “New Stranger Blues” and “Red’s Blues”.

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0779_New_Stranger_Blues.wav
musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-0781_Reds_Blues.wav

And that’s “Red’s Blues”, fantastic guitar work from Rhode Island Red and Will Taylor. The Emporium Orkestra invites you to come and play or come and listen, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings at Bunky’s during the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas. I’ve got two more great songs to close the show. Here’s “It Hurts Me Too” and “Beedle Um Bum”.

This is Hairy Larry inviting you to enjoy Something Blue every Saturday night at ten. This week we’ll hear The Emporium Orkestra featuring Will Taylor and Diamond Jack.

Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at ten, right here on KASU.

Something Blue – Will Diamond

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-071_Big_River.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the Blues, for you.

musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-073_Buckets_Of_Rain.wav
musicEmporium_Orkestra2010-10-075_Little_Sister.wav

All right now we are featuring the Bunky’s Breakfast Emporium Orkestra recorded live on Cherry Street in Helena Arkansas on October 7, 2010 at the King Biscuit Blues Festival. We heard my friend Will Taylor do a Johnny Cash song, “Big River” followed by “Buckets Of Rain” and “Little Sister”. Will is from Little Rock. Besides playing with us at Helena he has also played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

You probably heard me singing along on “Little Sister”. Listen now as Will backs me up on “Love In Vain” and “San Francisco Bay Blues”.

We’re getting it at Bunky’s Breakfast on Cherry Street in Helena, Arkansas. The Bunky’s Breakfast Emporium Orkestra bring Blues and Jug Band Music to the breakfast crowd at The Biscuit Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings during the festival. It’s an open stage, true acoustic, and the core band consists of campfire musicians who camp at the Fireman’s Campground. So we play all night around the campfire and then we get up after a few hours sleep and play music for breakfast. You got to love it.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

Be sure you visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com and Delta Boogie at deltaboogie.com to keep up with the show and all the music we’re recording. And don’t forget the Jazz Thursday website at reverbnation.com/jazzthursday.

Back to Will Taylor singing three more songs for you. Here’s a Dylan tune, “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry”, a Gospel number “Down To The River To Pray”, and an all American classic, “Sixteen Tons”. Ok now, it’s Will Taylor.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. The Bunky’s Breakfast Emporium Orkestra is featuring Diamond Jack, recorded live at The Biscuit, October 7, 2010. Now that’s the Blues.

We heard “Come On Down To My House”, “Sneakin”, “Me And The Devil Blues”, and “Tell My Baby I’m Coming Home”. It’s a real pleasure to listen to and play with Diamond Jack every year at Bunky’s.

You’re listening to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry and you can message or friend me on Facebook or on the Delta Boogie Network at deltaboogie.net. Diamond Jack’s wife and bass player is Elan Holdsworth and you can friend her on Facebook too.

I’m going to let Jack introduce the band. Here he is singing three more songs, “Lousiana Stripes”, “Walking Blues”, and “Highway 49″.

Carl Hall is a regular performer with the Emporium Orkestra. I first met him at the Fireman’s Campground playing around a campfire. Closing the show he’s going to sing the Jimmy Reed classic “Baby, What You Want Me To Do”. Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

This is Hairy Larry inviting you to enjoy Something Blue every Saturday night at ten. This week we’ll hear the Jess Hoggard Band live at Bluesday Tuesday.

Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at ten, right here on KASU.

Something Blue – Get It On

01_HHS_TISLYA_UTB.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and tonight I’m featuring the Jess Hoggard Band recorded live at Bluesday Tuesday at the Newport Country Club on July 12, 2011. As you can hear they had a great night, everybody was up and dancing, enjoying the music.

We heard “High Heeled Sneakers”, “Today I Started Loving You Again”, and “Under The Boardwalk” featuring Charles Wood on vocals. Jess and Charles both sing leads and they almost always have the harmonies going too. Ivan Yarbrough plays bass and Cecil Parker on drums both have extensive Blues and R&B credentials. And Tim Hoggard played the harp for us all night.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listeing to Something Blue on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at http://kasu.org. To find out more about Something Blue and to listen to podcasts anytime go to http://sbblues.com. You can friend or message me on facebook or on the Delta Boogie Network at http://deltaboogie.net. And you can find Jess Hoggard on MySpace and Facebook.

There’s no music like live music and KASU sponsors Bluesday Tuesday in Newport every month. They also bring you Blue Monday, Bluegrass Monday and Jazz Thursday. The music is always great so put your dancing shoes on and come on out.

Here’s three more songs I know you will love. “Can I Change Your Mind”, Let’s Get It On”, and “Blue Suede Shoes”.

02_CICMM_LGIO_BSS-kasu.wav

—–

03_CB_SHC_KTTH.wav

Now that’s what I’m talking about. It’s the Jess Hoggard Band and they’ve got the Blues, for you. The entire show tonight was recorded at KASU’s Bluesday Tuesday held every second Tuesday at the Newport Country Club. It’s always a party and we partied hearty with the Jess Hoggard Band.

We heard Jess sing “Catfish Blues”, “Sweet Home Chicago”, and “Key To The Highway”. It’s a great band and it was a special treat to have Jesse’s brother, Tim Hoggard, blowing the harp. They are both great showmen and they have been featured on Something Blue many times.

I’m Hairy Larry and you’re listening to Somthing Blue on KASU, the home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas every Saturday night. Tune in on your radio at 91.9 FM or listen on the internet at http://kasu.org. Don’t miss Beale Street Caravan at 7:00, Rhythm & Grooves at 8:00, and Blues Where You Least Expect It at 9:00. Then after Something Blue stay tuned for Smokestack Lightning playing the Blues on into the morning.

And you can visit the Something Blue website at http://sbblues.com. Listen to podcasts of the shows online anytime and follow the links to find more great music on the internet.

Closing the show tonight I’ve got three more songs. Everybody was out on the floor “Twisting The Night Away”. Then for an encore the Jess Hoggard Band played an Arkansas medley with “Folsum Prison Blues” and “Mystery Train”. So now’s the time for all of you at home to stand up, enjoy this next song, and twist.
