Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some fine jazz recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop.
Before the pandemic the Jazz Department would host the Delta Jazz Workshop in the music building every July. Jazz students of all ages are eligible to attend but the enrolees are predominantly high school students interested in taking jazz at ASU.
Jay Shepherd and I would work together teaching jazz improvisation and one of the things I hate most about the pandemic is missing my week working and playing with Jay.
Besides teaching workshops and rehearsing ensembles all day long the Delta Jazz Workshop also put on a mini jazz festival with live jazz concerts each night for the attendees and open to the public. Besides working with the students I also recorded all the concerts and many of these recordings have been featured on Something Blue.
Jay Shepherd brought his jazz band on July 12, 2016, and they played a great show.
Playing with Jay that night were Tyler Washam, piano; Shane Chastain, piano; Terrell Montgomery, bass; and Keyven Dunn, drums. Jay was bandleader and he played guitar. All these musicians are from this area and most were ASU students at the time.
OK now, here’s Jay Shepherd playing the Chick Corea standard, “Spain”.

And that’s Jay Shepherd playing “Spain” recorded July 12, 2016 at the ASU Delta Jazz Workshop. Tune in to Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear more Jay Shepherd, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, Santana, and Rebeca Mauleon.
