Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a song I wrote, recorded right here in Northeast Arkansas.

On April 6, 2013, NJHB played their fourth performance at TheArts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. NJHB performances are more like an event then a rehearsed band with a different set of musicians at every show playing all original songs often with new charts put up on the music stands for their first performance.

At the show we had guest star, Chris “Stinger” Stevens, on guitar. Also playing were Mike “Zif” Lovell – guitar, Carl Abraham – drums, and Hairy Larry – piano, all from the Jonesboro area except for Chris who travelled in for the show.

On that night we had no bass and no horns but we soldiered on and played our show with half a band.

When listening to the recordings I loved the sound, especially the guitar work by Stevens and Lovell. So I mixed the songs to what is called a stub and then I wrote overdub scripts for bass and sax. Two of my friends agreed to come to my studio to play the overdubs and so I got Corey Emerson on bass and Cody Ballard on tenor sax.

So this song was recorded at TheArts@311 and at HairyLarryLand. Corey and Cody are such excellent musicians that they nailed everything first take. If you listen carefully sometimes it sounds like the guitars are answering the sax when, of course, the sax was recorded after the guitars.

So now, from the NJHB “Stinger” album here’s a song I wrote called “Mosaic”.

And that’s NJHB playing “Mosaic” recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro on April 6, 2013, with the bass and sax overdubbed later. Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear Mark Turner and Sun Ra.
