Liam Noble & Geoff Simkins – Stella By Starlight

All right now, that’s Liam Noble & Geoff Simkins playing the jazz standard, “Stella By Starlight”. Before that we heard the title track from the new Yoni Mayraz album, “Dybbuk Tse!”.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. Thanks to Bandcamp for hosting the albums we’re hearing tonight.

Not only do many contemporary jazz composers use Bandcamp to sell and promote their work, Bandcamp has also become home for many jazz archivists to distribute re-released jazz albums that have long been out of print.

“Goes To Africa With Love” was recorded by the Southern University Jazz Ensemble in 1973, directed by Alvin Batiste.

Now-Again Records says “This is the first-ever commercial release of New Orleans’ legend, Alvin Batiste’s, Spiritual Jazz albums created with the college band he instructed and led in Baton Rouge. Originally given away as souvenirs at Southern University, the two albums contain deep Batiste originals. They are some of the most sought after albums of the seventies jazz underground.”

Now re-released on Bandcamp this is a true treasure. The fact that it is recorded by student musicians only makes it more valuable in my eyes.

So, closing the show here’s Yoni Mayraz playing “South Star” and then we’ll hear the Southern University Jazz Ensemble do “Music Came”.
