Tony Williams, Mr. Spock
Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues, for you.
Vincent Holden, Raw Power
Now that’s what I’m talking about. From his album, “Taste Of Mud” that’s Vincent Holden playing his own song, “Raw Power”. Kicking us off tonight we heard The New Tony Williams Lifetime do “Dr. Spock”.
Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

Frank Zappa, Strictly Genteel
Tony Williams, Fred
All right now, fantastic guitar work from Allan Holdsworth playing “Fred” from The New Tony Williams Lifetime. The album “Believe It” is a high point for Tony Williams, a most important jazz fusion drummer. Before that we heard another jazz fusion pioneer, Frank Zappa, playing “Strictly Genteel”.
At 17 Tony Williams played in Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet. The Miles Davis albums, “Bitches Brew” and “Tribute To Jack Johnson”, released in 1970 and 71 were an introduction to jazz fusion for many jazz fans. John McClaughlin played guitar on “Tribute to Jack Johnson”. Before that, in 1969, The Tony Williams Lifetime, included John McLaughlin. In 1975 Allan Holdsworth played with Soft Machine and on The New Tony Williams Lifetime album “Believe It”.

I love live music recordings and Frank Zappa recorded all of his shows with many of these recordings released as live albums. The Frank Zappa songs we’re hearing tonight are from “Make A Jazz Noise Here”.
“It was first released in June 1991, and was the third Zappa album to be compiled from recordings from his 1988 world tour, following Broadway the Hard Way and The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life”* I guess they had a pretty good year in 1988.
Now closing the show here’s Frank Zappa playing “The Black Page (New Age Version)” and “Black Napkins”.
