DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Colossus
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-03-31
Thanks Marty, Today we’re going to hear a radio edit of one of NJHB’s most played songs.
NJHB had their first recording session at HairyLarryLand on December 29, 2012. From that session we released our first album, “Circular Logic” that included my song “Colossus”.
In 2013 we were the New Jazz House Band playing once a month at TheArts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. Every month the personnel varied and every month we released another album.
On February 2, 2012, we recorded the album “Colossus”, with the cover art showing the Colossus Of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Then on July 6, 2013, we recorded our most accessible album, “Cookin’ For Piper” and we closed the show with “Colossus”.
The amazing thing about that show was that we got the band back from our first recording session. Joseph Curtis, trumpet; Cody Ballerd, tenor; Mike “Zif” Lovell, guitar, Matt Jackson, bass, and I’m playing my Fender Rhodes.
The only difference was instead of a drum set we had James Carvell on percussion and we added a second guitarist, David Shade. Almost everyone in the band is from Northeast Arkansas and I believe we all attended ASU.
By July NJHB had found itself. We didn’t just improvise the solos, we improvised the arrangements and we spent most of our time improvising duets and playing group improvisation. On this version of “Colossus” after a trumpet, tenor, and piano solo I led the band into group improvisation by scat singing and that’s the exciting part with the best solo work.
We continued playing “Colossus” for the rest of our 2013 season. We played it at my Senior Recital and released it on my “Bop Soup” album. By then I had added lyrics. Yes there will be links to these albums on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
And about that radio edit. NJHB songs usually ran in the 20 minute range. That’s a little too long for radio. So I cut “Colossus” in half to play it on Arkansas Roots.
Ok now, here’s NJHB playing “Colossus” recorded on July 6, 2013, at TheArts@311.
