Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an extended trumpet solo recorded at Gracie’s Place right here in Jonesboro.

I met Ron Horton when he was Director of Jazz Studies at ASU. He was playing trumpet in Jazz Alliance. I had been playing music at The Edge Coffeehouse for years so when I saw they had a jazz band playing there on Thursday nights I had to go. I liked their music and soon I was going every Thursday, recording their shows. It was great when they would invite students to jam and that’s how I first met Tim Moore and Clinton Curtis, when they were still in High School.

Ron Horton had composed some of the songs they played and I was recording them anyway so I talked to Ron about doing a Jazz Alliance album. And that’s how I produced “Partly Cloudy”, recording Ron Horton originals at live shows, until we had enough.

“Partly Cloudy” has five songs, all of them recorded at The Edge except for “Blues In A Hurry” which was recorded at Gracie’s Place on May 14, 2010.

Playing on “Blues In A Hurry” are

Ron Horton – trumpet
David Eckert – bass
Craig Collison – vibes
and
Mike Overall – drums

Ron and Craig taught at ASU. David was librarian at the Jonesboro Public Library. And Mike Overall was a jazz fixture in Jonesboro for decades as president of the Jonesboro Jazz Society and drummer with Nightlife, Giant Steps, and Joe Lee. Mike often promoted local musicians in his Overall Comments column at the Jonesboro Sun.

In the last half of the 20th century small groups featuring extended solos dominated jazz music. This allows the jazz soloist time to stretch out and it takes both endurance and imagination. On “Blues In A Hurry” Craig Collison plays the intro, Ron Horton plays the head and then solos for almost half the song. Also soloing are Craig Collison on vibes, David Eckert on bass, and Mike Overall, drums.

Ok now, from their “Partly Cloudy” album here’s Jazz Allince playing a Ron Horton original, “Blues In A Hurry”.
