DJ Hairy Larry Presents Phish Featuring Gary Gazaway

Gary Gazaway at KASU Jazz Thursday

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a jam band featuring trombone.

I’m not sure but this may be the first time that Phish has been featured on Arkansas Roots. Phish is a great jam band but I think Oklahoma is as close as they get to Arkansas.

The Arkansas connection is in the trombone.

Gary Gazaway is a friend of KASU. After attending ASU he toured the world as a sideman and as El Bujo, his festival act. He has played for KASU many times including at Jazz Thursday, Bebopalooza, and Jazz for the Holidays. He’s a great guy and great on the trumpet.

Gary Gazaway is also a friend of Phish. With a ph. So Phish was doing a Talking Heads set and they wanted some horns so they recruited Dave Grippo on sax and Gary Gazaway on trombone. Yes. Gary also plays valve trombone.

Closing their show they brought the horns back and Gary played a great solo on the Trey Anastasio song, “Suzy Greenberg”.

As I said, Gary went to ASU. He now lives In Pocahontas, Arkansas. Most of us have heard him many times but I’ve never heard him play with Phish. Until now.

So now, here’s Phish featuring Gary Gazaway on trombone playing “Suzy Greenberg”.
