DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Malaysia

Bebop Beatniks – Live At Blues Fest
Thanks Marty, Today we’re going to hear Bebop Beatniks – Live At Blues Fest.
I wrote “Malaysia” in the fall of 2012 and it was first released on the NJHB album, “Bella’s Blues”, recorded on January 4, 2013. It’s a Bossa Nova song with a beautiful melody and a hard bop turnaround that catches everyone’s attention.
It quickly became an NJHB favorite and I also used it as a show closer for Bebop Beatniks and my solo piano shows.
In fact, when Bebop Beatniks recorded Live At Blues Fest on September 24, 2023, “Malaysia” was our closer.
We played as a quintet with two percussionists featuring
Tyler Remagen – sax and flute
Hairy Larry – piano and vocals
Jeremy Jackson – bass
Alex Washam – drums
and
Conley Hunt – percussion and vocals
I want to take a minute to talk about Tyler Remagen. Tyler helped me play on my recitals when he was an undergraduate in the ASU jazz program. I invited him to join Bebop Beatniks and he played on our studio album “Leaves”.
He also played with NJHB and on my “Elphonium” album recorded on November 30, 2018, in the ASU Bandroom at my composition recital. We had a little side project going called Lady Day and The Prez featuring Whitley Newman singing Billie Holiday songs with Tyler playing the Lester Young tenor sax parts.
As always, I will leave links on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
And if you listen to these songs you will hear how well he played.
Then after he graduated from ASU he went to Cincinatti and took a Masters in Saxophone Performance. When he got back to Jonesboro his playing was at a whole different level as they say in the jazz world. That’s what that kind of intensive study does for you.
And we were fortunate to have him playing with Bebop Beatniks again including on September 24, 2023, when we recorded Bebop Beatniks “Live At Blues Fest”.
After playing together for all those years we had a tight band but Tyler Remagen was definitely the star of the show. We recorded a saxophone album.
And as I said before, “Malaysia” closed the show.
So now, here’s Bebop Beatniks playing “Malaysia” featuring Tyler Remagen on tenor sax.
