Marshall Allen – 101: An Audio Odyssey

Marshall Allen – Slingshot Effect

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues, for you.

Sun Ra & His Arkestra – Strange Celestial Road

Now that’s what I’m talking about. That’s Sun Ra and his Arkestra walking down the “Strange Celestial Road”. Kicking us off tonight we heard “Slingshot Effect” from Marshall Allen’s new album “101: An Audio Odyssey”. He made an album after his 100th birthday and now again at 101. He’s an inspiration to aging jazz musicians, like me.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, Saturday nights at 10:00 Central on 91.9 FM and streaming at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to listen anytime and for links to more music by the featured musicians.

Coming up next we’ll hear the Art Ensemble Of Chicago play “That the Evening the Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?” a song written by Joseph Jarman and Lester Bowie. Joseph Jarman was born is Pine Bluff Arkansas. Then Sun Ra & His Arkestra will play “Door of the Cosmos”.

All right now. We heard Marshall Allen play “Meteor Gathering” and then a song by Roscoe Mitchell called “Toro”. Roscoe Mitchell was a founding member of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago.
