Sonny Rollins and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Doxy

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues, for you.

Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson Quintet, Sonny’s Blues

All right now, that’s Sonny Rollins and the Modern Jazz Quartet playing “Doxy” and “Sonny’s Blues”.

I first heard McCoy Tyner when he was playing with John Coltrane. He’s still one of my favorite jazz piano players. Here he is paired up with another sax colossus, Michael Brecker, doing a John Coltrane song, “Impressions”.

The Modern Jazz Quartet with Sonny Rollins, Bag’s Groove

Now that’s what I’m talking about, Sonny Rollins and the Modern Jazz Quartet jamming on the Milt Jackson song “Bag’s Groove”. This song is from the “Newk and Bags” album recorded live when Sonny Rollins was guesting with the Modern Jazz Quartet. As you would expect the results are stellar melding one of the finest tenor players with one of the best rhythm sections of all time. Groundbreakers collaborating.

Before that we heard the McCoy Tyner Trio with Michael Brecker playing “Changes”.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. I want to thank the Public Library for their Fregal service, free and legal downloads with your library card. I logged on to the library’s website to download some of the classic jazz we’re hearing tonight. I can remember when you used to have to buy the album to listen to the music. Now, on the internet, there’s more great music then we’ll ever have time to listen to. So I’m skimming the cream on Something Blue.

Closing the show we’ve got another song from the “Infinity” album featuring McCoy Tyner and Michael Brecker. Here’s “Mellow Minor”.
