Chris Potter Quartet, Airegin

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues, for you.

Omar Sosa, So All Freddie

All right now, kicking us off we heard Chris Potter play “Airegin”. Then Omar Sosa did “So All Freddie” from his “Eggun” CD. Omar Sosa is a Cuban composer who was commisioned to write and record a tribute to the Miles Davis landmark, “Kind Of Blue”. Fantastic work capturing the feel of that important album while staying true to Miles intent of always bringing something new.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. When I went back to school after I retired I made it my mission to find contemporary jazz composers and listen to their work. I blog about 21st Century Jazz Composers at 21centjazz.com. This week I am featuring musicians writing and recording today.

Next up is Joey Alexander playing “Chelsea Bridge”. Then we’ll hear another Omar Sosa song, “El Alba”.

Omar Sosa, Alejet
Joey Alexander, Criss Cross
Joey Alexander, City Lights

Now that’s what I’m talking about, Joey Alexander playing his own composition, “City Lights”. Before that we heard him play “Criss Cross” and Omar Sosa did “Alejet”. Joey Alexander is a child prodigy jazz pianist and composer from Indonesia making waves in the jazz world.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. I want to thank the public library’s Fregal service where I was able to legally download the music we’re hearing tonight with my library card.

Closing the show we have Chris Potter playing two of his compositions, “C.P.’s Blues” and “Sundiata”. Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, blues is the mainsteam.
