From The Archives Of Something Blue October 17, 2021

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a fantastic version of a jazz standard recorded at Jazz Thursday.

I booked Jazz Thursday at TheArts@311 and other Jonesboro venues for several years working with KASU on publicity and funding. We enjoyed a lot of great shows featuring an opening act and then The Little Big Band or The Adhoc Combo hosting a jam session.

On May 23, 2013, we heard a well known Jonesboro jazz band, Giant Steps, featuring Craig Baker on trumpet; Michael McGowan, tenor; Joy Sanford, piano; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. All seasoned musicians with years of stage performance behind them, they really stepped up and everyone enjoyed their set of jazz standards.

All of the musicians except Michael McGowan have played in Northeast Arkansas for their entire career. McGowan lived in Jonesboro for several years, playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band. Then he moved to Texas to teach music. Recently he returned to Jonesboro to attend the Delta Jazz Workshop and he played with Bebop Beatniks on our Wednesday night show.

Here’s Giant Steps now, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday, on May 23, 2013, playing “Lullaby Of Birdland”.

And that’s Giant Steps playing “Lullaby Of Birdland” recorded live at KASU Jazz Thursday. Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear more jazz from Tom Ollendorff, Samara Joy, and Nubya Garcia.
