Thanks Marty, whenever I’m working on a jazz show I always check through my Delta Jazz Workshop archives.
Every night during the Delta Jazz Workshop there is a different band performing for the students. I try to record all of these performances for the musicians and for the Archives of Something Blue.
On July 11, 2016, we were at Riceland Hall to hear Jazz Writers Big Band. I was fortunate to get good recordings of this performance. They never play the same show twice. Members of the band write or arrange all of the songs they play and they are always coming up with something new. Which makes them perfect for Something Blue.
There’s no music like live music and it’s even better when the musicians are your friends. And when it’s your friends playing songs they wrote or arranged that’s what creativity is all about.
On this week’s Something Blue show I’ll be featuring original compositions by Tom O’Connor and Joseph Curtis. For Arkansas Roots I picked a great jazz standard, “Here’s That Rainy Day”.
Now here’s the Jazz Writers Big Band recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop on July 11, 2016, playing Tom O’Connor’s arrangement of “Here’s That Rainy Day”.
And that’s the Jazz Writers Big Band playing “Here’s That Rainy Day” right here at ASU. Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00 to hear some originals played by the Jazz Writers Big Band, Tumi Mogorosi, and Steve Grossman.
