DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jeannie And The Guys Playing Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear one of my favorite bands sing a blues song that was a hit in 1949.

I first learned the song “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” on the Electric Flag album released in the sixties. “The song charted on the US R&B charts by three different artists in 1949, Stick McGhee’s version … reached #2, Wynonie Harris’s hit #4 and Lionel Hampton went up to #13.”* It’s also a popular country and jug band song, let’s face it, people just love singing wine, wine, wine.

Jeannie and The Guys came out of Northeast Arkansas rock and roll roots but they played everything, rock, soul, country, and R&B. Their version of “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” features Zyndall Wayne Raney on vocals and piano. Also playing were Jeannie Hendrix – drums, Doug Greeno – bass, Marcus Grady – guitar, and Dale Turner – guitar. They all sing.

I recorded them for Something Blue at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on July 13, 2010. Later in the show they invited me up to blow some blues harp with them. I’ll be playing that song on Something Blue.
