Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a band of young musicians play a jazz standard.

It was my great good fortune to be able to work with high school jazz musicians at the Delta Jazz Workshop for several years. I enjoyed the workshop sessions and listening to rehearsals but my favorite job was rehearsing small groups made up of workshop attendees, mostly high school students.

In July of 2018 I was given some amazing musicians including a rhythm section of young musicians who were already playing at a professional level. So this was a great opportunity to show these students the whole process, selecting songs, creating instrumental sections, writing arrangements, and rehearsing for a concert.

And we had five days to make all this happen.

The first problem I confronted was instrumentation. We had four trumpets and a tenor sax. I think that could be called top heavy. So I asked one of the college students in the band, Brian Bewely, if he could play flugelhorn. The flugelhorn has a round soft sound, not as bright as a trumpet, so I grouped him with the sax. We wanted a flute player on “Stella By Starlight” so Dr. Carroll recruited another college student, Cody Ballard. His main instrument is tenor sax so that gave us a woodwind section of flute, sax, flugelhorn or two saxes and a flugelhorn.

The third college student in the band was Chris Wilson so he led the trumpet section. They worked together, as a unit, providing background punches the way only three trumpets can.

Everyone had a solo.

There were ten musicians in the ensemble and I’m going to name names so here’s the seven high school students that played in Copyright Infringement.

Sophie Hacker – guitar, Parker Robinson – tenor sax, Tucker Kyle – trumpet, Ryan Hartness – trumpet, Gabe Waters – bass, Braden Jones – drums, and Drew Murray – piano.

I did not play. I billed myself as bandleader and arranger. Sophie Hacker suggested the name for the band.

We had help from several other workshop attendees who would sit in the audience and let us know what they heard.

We played Friday night in Riceland Hall and everyone really stepped up. Best foot forward, dress for success, work together, 100% on.

We played three songs. The other two will be on Something Blue, Saturday night. I will also include links on the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

So now, recorded in Riceland Hall at the Delta Jazz Workshop on July 13, 2018, here’s Copyright Infringement playing “Stella By Starlight”.
