Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a song named after a house plant.

During the pandemic I quit playing out but I still had to play so I had a livestream on twitch. It was great. I had a repertoire of 16 original songs, and I played them and developed them on my livestream, as part of my regular practice, and as course work at ASU.

I wrote a Latin salsa I called “African Violet”, remembering my grandmother’s favorite house plants. Now, I’ve never been able to grow African Violets but at least I could write a song about them.

I didn’t want to play without a band so I programmed my songs into iRealPro, a music practice program that writes the bass and drum parts to make up my piano trio. This is an excellent program, that runs on Android or Apple phones and tablets, and it really does a good job on the algorithmic composition. Lots better to practice with than a metronome.

“African Violet” became a favorite on our Bebop Beatniks shows. It has a good bounce and it’s great to solo over. We often played it as our opening song. I will include links to Bebop Beatniks playing “African Violet” at sbblues.com.

Now I license all my songs Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 and I make them available for collaboration. Often my arrangements are designed with collaboration in mind. I have to practice the head, the chords, and the solos anyway so I try to arrange the songs so they make sense for a collaborator.
