Hank Jones – I Got Rhythm

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues, for you.

Ray Charles – Georgia on My Mind
Coleman Hawkins – Body and soul
Sarah Vaughn – Body and Soul

Sarah Vaughn – Sophisticated Lady

Ok now, a whole show celebrating Public Domain Day featuring songs released in 1930 and entering the public domain in 2026. In order we heard Hank Jones do one of the most important songs in jazz history, “I Got Rhythm” followed by
Ray Charles singing “Georgia on My Mind”, Coleman Hawkins playing his big hit, “Body and Soul”, and then Sarah Vaughn singing “Body and Soul”.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to listen anytime and for links to more music by the featured musicians.

“Love For Sale” was written in 1930 and it’s a hit again with the Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga version now on Youtube. We’re gonna hear Ella and Chet. Nuff said.

Ella Fitzgerald with The Roy Eldridge Sextet – Love For Sale
Chet Baker – Love for Sale

Ella Fitzgerald

Nina Simone – Exactly Like You
Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – Three Little Words
Lee Wiley – But Not For Me
Dizzy Gillespie – Sunny Side Of The Street

Now that’s what I’m talking about, great renditions of public domain songs with Nina Simone singing “Exactly Like You”, Duke Ellington And His Orchestra doing “Three Little Words” Lee Wiley with “But Not For Me”, and Dizzy Gillespie playing “Sunny Side Of The Street”.

These songs all entered the public domain in 2026. The recordings, however, are not public domain because they were recorded after 1930 with the exception of “Three Little Words” because Duke Ellington recorded it in 1930 so both the song’s copyright and the mechanical rights copyright are now public domain.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. I want to thank the Internet Archive for inspiring me to do this celebration of new public domain songs. I even made “A Public Domain Picture” featuring Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, and Bing Crosby, for their contest. I’ll include links at sbblues.com.

Closing the show here’s Sonny Rollins With The Modern Jazz Quartet playing “Time On My Hands”, And then an “Embraceable You” triptych featuing Ella Fitzgerald singing, the Barry Harris Trio with “Embraceable You”, and then Joe Lovano playing “Embraceable You” with some great horn arrangements.
