Roy Buchanan – Shredding The Blues
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a guitarist who was born in Arkansas play some religious blues.
Roy Buchanan was born in Ozark, Arkansas, on September 23, 1939. Besides being born in Arkansas he has musical ties to the state. He played with Ronnie Hawkins and through Ronnie got to know the musicians who later became The Band. For a while he was giving Robbie Robertson guitar lessons.
According to the CALS Encyclopedia Of Arkansas he “melded blues, country, jazz, and rock music into a unique sound.” This may be true but like I told Larry Donn, it’s all blues.
On January 10, 1987 he gave a performance at My Father’s Place in Roslyn New York that was broadcast live on WBAB, 92.3 FM. This was later released as an album called “Shredding The Blues”.
I picked the closing song of this performance to play for you today. A song he wrote called “The Messiah Will Come Again”. Like I said, religious blues.
In 1988 Roy Buchanan tragically died in jail. I can say about him what I say about a lot of Arkansas musicians. I ain’t saying he was better than anyone else, but there sure isn’t anyone who plays better than him.
