Sunna Gunnlaugs – Songs From Iceland

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear Bebop Beatniks play a jazz standard.

According to Learn Jazz Standards,

“Cold Duck Time” is a rock-influenced jazz standard written by Eddie Harris. It first appeared on the album Swiss Movement by Les McCann and Eddie Harris. … Swiss Movement is a live album that was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969.

This album was a hit LP at the time when FM album play was huge. “Cold Duck Time” features rock and jazz elements making it an early fusion song.

It’s a great tune that Bebop Beatniks played frequently.

So we had this great concert series going called In The Loft at The Edge. Turns out The Edge Coffee House has a great performance space on the second floor frequently called, the loft. It’s a large room with windows overlooking the ASU campus and I would book two bands a night and record them for Something Blue.

On March 18, 2017, Bebop Beatniks played In The Loft At The Edge and we opened with “Cold Duck Time”. It was a great night for Bebop Beatniks playing as a septet.

Playing on “Cold Duck Time” we’ll hear

Sid Davis – trumpet
Jon Vickers – alto
Tyler Remagen – tenor
Craig Collison – vibes
Paul Nunis – bass
Alex Washam – drums
and
Hairy Larry – piano

All students or faculty at ASU at the time.

After listening to this track I’ve decided to bring it back. So this may not be the last time you hear Bebop Beatniks playing this great song.

So now, recorded In The Loft at The Edge on March 18, 2017, here’s Bebop Beatniks playing “Cold Duck Time”.
