Philip G. Smith and The Gentlemen Of Jazz – Songs In The Key Of Love

Thanks Marty. This week we’ll hear an Arkansas jazz man tell us what he thinks about living in the south.

Philip G. Smith grew up in Blytheville, Arkansas and started playing the clarinet when he was 8 years old. He has a lifetime of experience playing all the saxophones and in addition plays a superb clarinet and has a rich baritone voice.

He has played with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bloomfield, Charlie Rich, Dinah Shore, Joe Williams, Johnny Mathis, and Big Joe Turner as well as many others to numerous to name.

Philip G. Smith And The Gentlemen Of Jazz have been playing and recording in Napa Valley, California. His drummer, Dave Black, used to play with Duke Ellington.

Herb Caen of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Phil Smith has a first rate band and plays the clarinet like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw”. When I listen to his sax work he reminds me of Joe Lee. Which doesn’t surprise me because they both were raised in the Delta and played in Memphis around the same time.

He is now on the Jazz Maui label where I found a lot of the information for this podcast.

I will post links at sbblues.com for anyone who wants to learn more about this fantastic Arkansas musician. I bought his album, “Songs In The Key Of Love”, which I will feature on Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00 Central.

So now, here’s Philip G. Smith Playing “Is It True What They say About Dixie” recorded live in NAPA Valley.
