From The Archive March 7, 2021 – Suzanne Michell Trio – “Sheik Of Araby”

Thanks Marty, this week on Something Blue we’re featuring some fine blues women including Suzanne Michell.

Suzanne played at the first Blues Fest in 1991 and she was a regular performer in Jonesboro, both solo and in groups, playing at Blues Fest, Sunday In The Park, Bebopalooza, and other venues around Jonesboro. She has dedicated her life to music, teaching and performing, playing blues, jazz, and folk music.

On May 23, 2010, she brought the Suzanne Michell Trio to the Craighead Forest Bandshell and gave us a brilliant set. Playing with her were Fred Wilson and Will Taylor. The entire trio are Arkansas musicians from Little Rock.

Suzanne and Fred do this marvelous counterpoint on a great old song, “The Sheik Of Araby” including jazz scat vocals and both Suzanne and Fred singing horn parts.

Here they are now, The Suzanne Michell Trio, singing “The Sheik Of Araby”.

From The Archive March 7, 2021 – Kyle Tims – “Little Wing”

Thanks Marty, I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues for you.

Kyle Tims got in touch with me about playing at Blues Fest and we were glad to have him perform in September of 1997. I was talking to some of my friends who had played at Blues Fest, Sonny Burgess, Doug Greeno, and Larry Donn, and they told me that Kyle’s father, Tommy Tims, was a rockabilly drummer back in the day. Music runs in the family in Northeast Arkansas so I expected Kyle to put on a good show but everyone was just knocked out by his fantastic blues guitar work following in the footsteps of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Here’s Kyle Tims now, with James Salger, bass, and Johnny Churchwell, drums, recorded at Blues Fest 97, playing a Hendrix song “Little Wing”.

From The Archive February 21, 2021 – Hairy Larry – “Even Dozen”

Thanks Marty, I’ve got a song today recorded right here at ASU.

I was taking composition from Dr. Tacke working on an algorithmic composition technique where I repeated a rhythmic motif in the left hand as a way of adding variety and to produce a unique comping rhythm. This worked out well so I added a melody for the piano as well as trumpet and bass parts. I recruited jazz students to play the piece, Tyler Worsham, piano; Hunter Durham, trumpet; and Tyler Montgomery, bass; all excellent musicians. We rehearsed the song once and then played it at Dr. Tacke’s Composition Seminar.

Ok, here’s that performance now, recorded at Arkansas State University on November 13, 2015. I call the piece “Even Dozen”.

From The Archive February 21, 2021 – Rob Alley – “A Foggy Day”

Thanks Marty, I just love playing some great jazz on Arkansas Roots.

I met Rob Alley when he was on the music faculty at ASU. He played jazz trumpet and was very helpful to jazz students letting them sit in when he played at The Edge Coffeehouse. I invited him to play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 21, 2009, and he put together a great band with Mike Overall on drums and Dave Eckert on bass. Mike was editor at the Jonesboro Sun and Dave is currently on the faculty at ASU teaching jazz bass and he’s the head librarian at the Public Library where we do our New Jazz In Jonesboro shows.

Ok now, here’s the Rob Alley Trio recorded on June 21, 2009, at the Craighead Forest Bandshell playing “A Foggy Day”.

From The Archive February 14, 2021 – Reba Russell – “At Last”

Thanks Marty, It’s great to be here on Arkansas Roots with a song from KASU Bluesday Tuesday.

Reba Russell was definitely a favorite with the Bluesday Tuesday audience and one of my favorites as well. When she was booked for November 13, 2012, she was glad to come and play but she wanted someone on sound so I got recruited. I ran my recording deck and the mix board which isn’t as hard as it sounds when the band is as good as the Reba Russell Band.

They played great and I got many good recordings. I’m playing some fantastic contemporary R&B on Something Blue this Saturday so I picked “At Last”, the Etta James classic. A great song and a great performance from Reba Russell, here she is now singing “At Last”.
