Art Porter – A Portrait Of Art

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some more great piano from our Arkansas treasure, Art Porter, Sr.

I have loved Art Porter’s music ever since I started listening to him on AETN and I’m on a quest to find all of his recordings, audio and video. That’s why I bought this CD, “A Portrait Of Art”, one of three releases he made that I’m aware of. I’m still working on getting the other two.

So, if you have or are aware of other recordings by Art Porter please contact KASU and they will let me know. I still think there must be a box somewhere in the thirteen state area where his television shows were broadcast full of VHS tapes labeled Art Porter. Now that would be a treasure recovered.

Art Porter was an educator and a family man who was deeply involved with music at his church. He didn’t like to travel and he didn’t tour except for the time he toured with his son, Art Porter Jr. Both of them also traveled to Washington DC to play at Bill Clinton’s inauguration.

Because of that and because he lived in a time before everyone recorded videos of everything with their phones there weren’t a lot of recordings made of his performances. Which makes recovering and saving the recordings we have of this great man all the more important.

Now, “West Side Story” may not have been the best album recorded on Broadway in the twentieth century. But it’s certainly up near the top along with “Porgy and Bess”. The funny thing is that for Broadway musicals both of these shows lean toward the operatic. People say they don’t like opera but they love “West Side Story” and “Porgy and Bess”.

The most popular song on the “West Side Story” album is “Somewhere”, a song Art Porter made his own.

So now, from his album, “A Portrait Of Art”, here’s Art Porter playing “Somewhere”.
