Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a blast from the past, an original song recorded by a Little Rock band in 1973.
My friend, John Good, got in touch with me last year. I hadn’t seen him since the nineties when he played in Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians. He also played at Blues Fest with his own band under his stage name, Duke.
He had some recordings that he had made at his studio, Rockin’ John Recording in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He worked with me and we released a double album recorded in 2000 and in 2024-2025 called “Honky Tonk Joy”.
In the liner notes I wrote:
It’s been a joy working with John Good, compiling this extensive collection of Central Arkansas music. Musicians featured go back to The Chaps and Sweet Magnolia Band, so this is my gateway into the past, from the sixties to the present and off into the future. Besides working with me on this album John has been helping KASU catalog and present this Arkansas music scene that has lasted for over 50 years.
So today I’m going to feature Sweet Magnolia Band singing “You’re The Kind Of Woman” from their self titled album recorded in 1973. John Good wrote the song and played on the album.
Now Sweet Magnolia Band was a rock band that was very much in tune with the rock audience in the seventies and they were very popular. Their album got some FM album airplay, which, at the time, was the best thing going.
