Jay Shepherd – Live At The Delta Jazz Workshop

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear not just a bossa, but The Bossa, recorded right here at ASU.

Of course there are many great bossa nova songs but only one of them introduced the American listening public to the bossa and that song is “The Girl from Ipanema”. Composed by the prolific Antonio Carlos Jobim it was a hit single off the hit jazz album, Getz/Gilberto, featuring Stan Getz on tenor sax and Joao Gilberto on guitar.

The song was sung by Astrud Gilberto because she was the only Brazilian at the session who knew English well enough to sing the American version. On the album her husband, Joao Gilberto sang the Portuguese lyrics but the single was shortened for radio and only had the Astrud Gilberto vocals.

She was not a trained vocalist but her voice and phrasing turned out to be perfect for the song which became an international hit and the song that introduced the American listening public to the bossa nova.

Wikipedia says “It is believed to be the second-most recorded pop song in history, after “Yesterday” by the Beatles.”

Jay Shepherd played the song at the Delta Jazz Workshop on July 12, 2016. Playing on the song were:

Jay Shepherd – guitar
Tyler Worsham – piano
Terrell Montgomery – bass
and
Keyven Dunn – drums

All students at ASU.

So now, recorded on July 12, 2016, in The Fine Arts Recital Hall as part of the Delta Jazz Workshop here’s Jay Shepherd playing “The Girl from Ipanema”.
