DJ Hairy Larry Presents Paul Nunis Playing Kokomo Blues

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-08-07

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear The Bluescaster playing acoustic blues at KASU Jazz Thursday.

Paul Nunis is The Bluescaster. I met him at Blues Fest. He played so well I immediately started playing his music on Something Blue. He was also active at The Arts@311 and a regular performer in the Jazz Thursday Jam Sessions.

Later Paul was a founding member of Bebop Beatniks, playing bass in my band for years until his solo career didn’t leave him with enough time to play as a sideman. He wrote “At The Speed Of Love”, the hit on the Bebop Beatniks album, “Leaves”.

He wrote songs all the time and we often shared new material at Angie Owens’ Songwriters Workshop.

Now, about that name Bluescaster. Electric blues is often played on a Telecaster or a Stratocaster so that’s one way of looking at it.

Paul and I both read a lot of Science Fiction and Fantasy so that opens up another way to look at it.

He’s like a spellcaster, a bard who casts spells with his blues. That works for me because he’s a guitar wizard.

So now, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday on June 28, 2012, here’s Paul Nunis playing “Kokomo Blues”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Blue Bossa

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Blue Bossa
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-07-30

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a bossa, featuring two of my friends, recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

Besides being a jazz clinic the Delta Jazz Workshop is a mini festival with five jazz concerts from Monday through Friday. You can’t learn jazz without listening to jazz and since there’s no music like live music you can’t play jazz without listening to live jazz. So the nightly concerts are actually an integral part of the learning experience.

The concerts were also a great opportunity for me to record Northeast Arkansas jazz musicians for Something Blue. I mean, I was going to the concerts anyway so I might as well roll tape, I mean fill flash cards, the modern day equivalent of tape.

On July 12, 2016, it was Jay Shepherd’s turn to bring his band and play. I’ve known Jay for years and he’s played guitar with Bebop Beatniks and with NJHB. He plays stand out performances on the new Bebop Beatniks album, “Church” and he is also featured playing with NJHB on “Bop Soup” recorded at my Senior Recital.

Also featured on “Blue Bossa” is my friend Tyler Worsham on piano. He helped me many times at my recitals. He played at Trilogy For The Arts and he is featured on the NJHB album, “Blue Goose”, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro in the Jonesboro Public Library.

Also playing on “Blue Bossa” are Terrell Montgomery, bass and Keyven Dunn, drums. All of these musicians were students at ASU.

I remember one time in the bandroom, right after I wrote “Malaysia”, and before it was ever recorded, Tyler Worsham and Terrell Montgomery ran through the piece for me in what is called a reading. They enjoyed playing “Malaysia” and that’s a big boost to a composer’s confidence.

OK now, recorded live on July 12, 2016 in the Fine Arts Recital Hall at the Delta Jazz Workshop here’s Jay Shepherd and his band playing “Blue Bossa”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Cruize Brothers Playing Born Under A Bad Sign

From The Archives Of Something Blue July 23, 2023

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an Albert King song played at KASU Blue Monday.

When I first met Mike Dollins we were both promoting the blues on myspace. That’s right. We’re old.

Pretty soon he was contributing to Delta Boogie, keeping me up to date with the Little Rock Blues scene. Next thing you know he was coming up to Jonesboro to play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell and bringing his friends. Who soon became my friends.

I booked Hairy Larry and George in Little Rock and Mike Dollins was in the audience, enjoying the show. It was one of our best shows, too, with Suzanne and Fred joining us during the second set. I’ll include a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Mike Dollins plays blues and jazz guitar. Playing with Mike at Blue Monday were Guido Ciardetti, bass and Brad Messer, drums. Their band name was The Cruize Brothers.

Mike told me that Brad passed away around 2012. Guido owns Hot Springs Music. All three of them are from Arkansas.

This podcast has another tie to Arkansas Roots. The song “Born Under A Bad Sign” was first recorded and made famous by Albert King. Albert King was born in Mississippi but he grew up near Forrest City, Arkansas, where his family moved when he was eight years old. He started his music career with the Groove Boys in Osceola, Arkansas.

I always introduce “Born Under A Bad Sign” as an Albert King song, which is, of course, correct. But the lyrics to “Born Under a Bad Sign” were written by Stax Records singer William Bell with the music by Stax bandleader Booker T. Jones.

So now, here’s The Cruize Brothers, recorded for Something Blue on June 15, 2009, playing “Born Under A Bad Sign”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Common Time Quartet Playing This I Dig Of You

From The Archives Of Something Blue July 16 2023

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a Hank Mobley song recorded by ASU students at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

The Common Time Quartet was Josh Carter, sax; Alex Ditto, guitar; Spencer Rawlins, bass; and Chris Isom, drums. They are all still playing music around here except Josh Carter who moved to Japan.

All four are excellent musicians and the Common Time Quartet performed every week at different Jonesboro venues. So I was very pleased to get to record their well rehearsed band at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

I met them all at ASU, playing in the jazz small groups and they also helped me with my composition recitals. I even got to play with Chris Isom again this summer at the ASU band room when he subbed in for the Bebop Beatniks drummer at one of our sessions.

Ok now, here’s the Common Time Quartet playing “This I Dig Of You” at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 3, 2017.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Low Earth Orbit

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-07-09

Thanks Marty, today I’m going to take my chill jazz piano into “Low Earth Orbit”.

The pandemic was hard on everyone but it was particularly hard on musicians. Many musicians not only had to endure lockdown but they lost their income too.

It was hard on me because, for me, like many other musicians, playing music is not optional. Of course, I practiced every day but as any working musician will tell you, that’s not the same. I like to practice but I have to play for an audience.

So when my daughter started livestreaming I thought, maybe that could work for me? I got a twitch account and set up a twitch studio with a powerful computer, lights, and webcams. It was just the kind of project that I like. Technical and creative.

I picked some songs I’d already written and I wrote some more. Pretty soon I had 16 songs in my streaming repertoire. I programmed iRealPro to play bass and drums on my songs while I added piano. It was great. I called my channel Hairy Larry Practicing Piano but, to me, it was still a live performance three times a week.

And then we started having lulls between the surges and I felt safe enough to play outside, so I would play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell, Beatles Park, or I’d just find some nice scenery and sit in front of it and play.

I call it Guerilla Livestreaming Chill Jazz Piano In Scenic Northeast Arkansas.

I licensed all of these recordings Creative Commons Attribution to make it easy for others to collaborate with me or use my music in their projects.

Check out the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for some links.

Now, recorded at Beatles Park in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, on March 27, 2022, here’s “Low Earth Orbit”.
