DJ Hairy Larry Presents Delta Legends Playing I’m Your Professor

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-07-02

Thanks Marty, today I’m going to sing a song I learned from a blues legend, Sam Myers.

I love the King Biscuit Blues Festival and I used to attend every year. One of my favorite acts was Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers. When they played I was always front and center dancing to their great blues.

One of the songs Sam did was “I’m Your Professor”. Because of ASU I just had to add the song to my repertoire. It’s a jump blues with humorous lyrics.

Well, Sam died in 2006, but I kept on singing that song. And when Delta Legends played at The Biscuit there I was with John and Jeremy singing “I’m Your Professor”. Of course, I dedicated it to the memory of Sam Myers.

Delta Legends are John Shepherd, guitar; Jeremy Burnett, harp; and Hairy Larry, bass and harp. We all sing. John and Jeremy are from Wynne and I’ve lived in Arkansas for over fifty years, but even before I moved to Arkansas I had Arkansas Roots because Chicago Blues was created by musicians who moved to Chicago from the Delta.

Ok now, here’s Delta Legends on the Cedell Davis Stage at the King Biscuit Blues Festival on October 11, 2019, playing a song I learned from Sam Myers, “I’m Your Professor”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents the Eleven O’clock Small Group Playing Grumpy Cat At SXSW

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-06-25

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original jazz song with a spoken word part about popular culture in the internet age.

My advisor, Tim Crist, was always encouraging composition students to involve others in multimedia projects. So I put together Trilogy For The Arts, an outdoor happening featuring jazz music, spoken word, metal sculpture, poetry, dance, photography, and audio and video recording.

I also want to thank Don Bowyer and Ken Carroll for saying yes and helping me make this happen.

The Eleven O’clock Small Group played the jazz. Trevor Scudder welded the sculpture. Lizz Etzkorn was dancing with hula hoops. Karen Newberry, Rick Lott, Gregory Hansen, and Mike Luster read poetry.

So, mostly ASU students and faculty, living and working in Arkansas.

I’ll include a link to the videos and to a Delta Boogie page with all the details, photos, and the program for the event.

The only thing bad that happened was the last couple of songs got rained out. Fortunately, I had recorded the rehearsal, so I can play this song I wrote on From The Archives Of Something Blue.

“Grumpy Cat AT SXSW” includes a spoken word part that I read at the rehearsal. It’s a short commentary on how an internet meme can create a star out of a cat.

So now, rained out at Trilogy For The Arts on April 24, 2015, but fortunately recorded at rehearsal here’s the Eleven O’clock Small Group playing my song, “Grumpy Cat At SXSW”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Salty Dogs

From The Archives Of Something Blue June 18, 2023

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original country song I recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.

I had been promoting The Salty Dogs on Delta Boogie and Something Blue for several years. Brad Williams sent me their CDs and I was knocked out. I mean how does a band sound progressive and old time country at the same time. Their country sound has a lot of rock and gospel included. I guess I would say they are a country band that rocks and sings gospel from the heart.

On March 12, 2013, they came to play at KASU Bluesday Tuesday, held at the Newport Country Club. This was the first time I heard them live and they did not disappoint. And, as you will hear, I was fortunate to get good recordings.

The Salty Dogs are Brad Williams, Bart Angel, Brent LaBeau, and Nick Devlin, all from Arkansas except Nick, who is from Scotland. I’ll let Brad tell you a little bit more about his Arkansas Roots before he sings his song for you.

So now, recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas on March 12, 2013, here’s The Salty Dogs singing “Water To Wine”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees Playing Daniel

From The Archives Of Something Blue June 11, 2023

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an acoustic quartet play an Elton John song at the Arkansas Roots Festival.

When I heard the Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees band playing at the Arkansas Roots Festival they were so relaxed and their delivery was so smooth it was like hearing some musicians playing out on the back porch.

They sounded great, but it wasn’t until I heard the recordings that I realized how good they really play.

Every part well played, every note in the right place, vocals that tell the story, harmonies always spot on, all blending together in a balanced sound.

It just don’t get no better than this.

So now, here’s Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees singing the Elton John song, “Daniel”, recorded at the Arkansas Roots Festival on April 8, 2017.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Alliance Playing Partly Cloudy

From the Archives Of Something Blue June 4, 2023

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original jazz composition recorded right here in Jonesboro.

Before I returned to ASU, Jazz Alliance was playing at The Edge Coffeehouse. When I went to hear them play I immediately became a fan, going to every show and then recording all the shows for Something Blue.

They played jazz standards but they also played original compositions by their trumpeter, Dr. Ron Horton, who was the Director of Jazz Studies at ASU. Also in the band playing vibes and drums was Craig Collison, Director of Percussion Studies.

I recorded the album, “Partly Coudy”, at their live shows selecting the best performances for each song. Which wasn’t always easy because they were primarily a live performance act and they always played well.

Featured on today’s song are Mike Overall, former editor of The Jonesboro Sun, who passed on in 2014. Ron Horton moved to the east coast where he played in Roger Humphreys band, RH Factor, until 2018. Craig Collison retired from his position as Director Of Percussion Studies at ASU and still lives in Jonesboro. Derek Doyle also remains in the Jonesboro area playing all styles of music.

You will hear featured soloists, Ron Horton on trumpet, then Craig Collison, vibes, and Derek Doyle, bass.

Ok now, here’s the title track from the Jazz Alliance “Partly Cloudy” album recorded on September 18, 2009.
