Joe Lee – Tuxedo Junction

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a function at the junction. And that’s “Tuxedo Junction”.

“Tuxedo Junction” was a number one hit for Glenn Miller and His Orchestra in 1940. The song was introduced by Erskine Hawkins and His Orchestra in 1939 so that’s going back 86 years. When Joe Lee played it at Blues Fest in 1998 it was only 59 years old. Time flies when you’re making music.

The song was covered by The Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Harry James, Frankie Avalon, Joe Jackson, Stan Kenton, and Manhatten Transfer. That’s the definition of a standard.

Joe’s live version is a tight rendition. Joe plays the head on tenor sax and Kenny Caldwell plays guitar counterpoint on the bridge. Joe takes the first solo with the counterpoint on the bridge again. Kenny takes the second solo with Joe playing a little bit on the last eight. Then they share the head out ending just before the bridge.

It’s sweet!

Kenny Caldwell played in Jonesboro for years. Joe lee was born in Mississippi. He was a session man in Memphis. He taught band at Trumann, Arkansas, while recording hits at Fernwood in Memphis. Then he started his Alley Records label in Jonesboro and the rest is history.

We also heard Tom Mason on bass and David Carter, drums.

So now, here’s the Joe Lee Combo playing “Tuxedo Junction” recorded at Blues Fest on September 5, 1998.

Jazz Alliance – Partly Cloudy

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original jazz song recorded right here, in Jonesboro.

In my sixties I started attending the Jazz Alliance concerts, enjoying the music and eventually recording an album of Ron Horton originals. Ron was on trumpet and Craig Collison played vibraphone. They were both teaching at ASU at the time so they were my gateway back into the Music Department where I took Marimba from Mr. C and Jazz Improv from Dr. Horton.

I already knew Craig Collison because he played drums on the Joe Lee album, “Boppin’ At The Forest”, that I recorded in 2001.

You’ve heard of one name celebrities like Cher or Drake. Well, Craig is a one letter celebrity known to all his students as Mr. C.

And I’m still playing with Mr. C. He played vibes on my 1625 Groove Street album and he is currently playing with my new band, .

The song I picked to play today features

Ron Horton – trumpet
David Eckert – bass
and
Craig Collison – drums

Ron and David have moved out of Jonesboro but we are still glad to have Craig as part of our local jazz scene.

So now, recorded at the Edge Coffeehouse on October 23, 2009, here’s Jazz Alliance playing “Pulling Across The Lawn”.

Whirligig, El Buho, and Mike Gordon Poster

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear an original song that’s based in the blues.

On June 30, 2001, the 1st Annual Tulsa Jamfest was at The Monkey Bar in Tulsa, Oklohoma. The headline act was Whirligig and after a few songs they brought on El Buho and Mike Gordon. El Bujo is Gary Gazaway’s festival act and Mike Gordon was bassist and a founding member of Phish, a band Gary has played with.

They played an amazing set, featuring songs Gary wrote. All of the songs I have picked from this show for this podcast and for the Something Blue show Saturday night are Gary Gazaway originals.

The one I picked to play today is based in the blues and sounds great. The only problem is it’s 22 minutes long which, as they say in the trade, is not radio friendly. So I did a radio edit and we will hear the first third of the song.

I posted a link to the complete concert on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com where you can hear the whole song as well as the whole show.

Gary Gazaway has helped KASU with jazz performances many times. So, thanks Gary for all your help and for all your great music everywhere, all over the world, over the years.

So now here’s a Gary Gazaway original, “Wham Bam Boodle” recorded at The Monkey Bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 30, 2001.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Freddy’s Blues

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Freddy’s Blues
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2025-11-02

Hairy Larry Live at the Delta Dirt Distillery

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear someone called Hairy Larry playing at the King Biscuit Blues Festival.

I met Gregg Cook in Clarksdale, Mississipi, during the Sunflower Blues Festival in 1990. We were both dancing. It’s surprising how many of my Biscuit friends I met dancing or playing music around a campfire.

I was talking to Gregg last year about where I could play jazz piano during The Biscuit and he suggested that I talk to Thomas at the Delta Dirt Distillery. So I did and I played last year and this year. It’s a great venue for me, an upscale piano bar with a festival audience that’s there for the music.

My Friday show was a little uneven but on Saturday I played the best solo show I’ve ever played with tons of improvisation. I played extended versions of four standards and four originals, I recorded audio and video, and I released a video on Youtube and an album, Hairy Larry “Live at the Delta Dirt Distillery”.

I’ll be playing two more songs from the album on Something Blue this week and I will leave links to the video and the album on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

I didn’t see Gregg at The Biscuit, this year, but I did see him in Marvell, Arkansas, the next weekind at the Levon Helm Down Home Jubilee. I would like to say that ended my festival season this year but I actually continued until Halloween when my family and friends played campfire music in my front yard.

I picked a song I wrote, “Freddy’s Blues” for Arkansas Roots, because it’s a story song with a funny lyric and when I play it solo I scat sing the horn parts. I hope you find it entertaining.

So now, recorded live at The Delta Dirt Distillery in Helena, Arkansas, on October 11, 2025, here’s someone they call Hairy Larry singing “Freddy’s Blues”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing Too Rolling Stoned

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing Too Rolling Stoned
From The Archives Of Something Blue – 2025-10-26

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some great blues guitar recorded live at Blues Fest.

On September 16, 2007, John Shepherd brought his band, Idle Americans, to Blues Fest for another stunning performance. I was taping Blues Fest for Something Blue and I was fortunate to get excellent recordings.

John Shepherd is from Wynne, Arkansas, and he is a blues guitar virtuoso with a distinctive blues sound and his own unique style. The band, Idle Americans, has gone under many names but the musicians are also from Wynne.

Playing at Blues Fest in 2007 we heard

John Shepherd – guitar and vocals
Robert Fronabarger – guitar
Jeremy Burnett – harmonica and vocals
Barry Eppes – bass
and
Mike Riley – drums

And they delivered a great show of both blues and blues-rock. I picked a Robin Trower song to play today, “Too Rolling Stoned”.

So, here we go. Here’s John Shepherd and Idle Americans playing “Too Rolling Stoned” from their performance at Blues Fest 2007.
