NJHB 2025-08-02

Thanks Marty, today we’ll hear the premier recording of a new song I wrote recorded at KASU New Jazz In Jonesboro.

NJHB recorded their first album at HairyLarryLand on December 29, 2012. In 2013 we released 8 1/2 albums counting “Bop Soup” as half an album. We were back in 2018 and 2019, recording an album at every show. After the pandemic we recorded an album outside of the Round Room on November 5, 2023, and then, last week, we recorded “The Hop Skip Jump”.

We are a different kind of jazz band featuring group improvisation. On November 30, 2019, when we recorded our “Checking For Traps” album, I said, “Then we’re gonna do like NJHB does, we’re gonna not just improvise the solos, we’re gonna improvise the arrangement, we’ll go outside, do whatever we want, have a good time.”

So to explain some of this I’m going to do an analysis of the excerpt of “The Hop Skip Jump” we’re about to hear. I will post a link to the whole album at sbblues.com.

This is a radio edit so it starts in the middle with the rhythm section playing and I’m soloing on my Fender Rhodes. After a bit I go outside which means I play in a scale that’s different than the key. The song is in F major which has one flat. I played in Eb minor pentatonic which has all the flats or black keys on the piano. If you listen carefully you will notice when I go outside.

Then I splash around, up and down, which means I play random chords and note clusters with jazz rhythm and tonal direction.

Then the horns, Neale Bartee on trombone and Eliecer Tamez on trumpet, improvise a duet while I solo underneath them.

This is followed by Matt Jackson playing a bass solo. I join Matt playing the head or melody of the tune. The rest of the rhythm section joins in making it up as they go.

I call for the horns and they continue their duet.

We then improvise a tight ending with Craig Collison on vibes and Alex Washam on drums following me playing a jazz trope or cliche.

Playing with NJHB on August 2, 2025 were

Eliecer Tamez – trumpet
Neale Bartee – trombone
Matt Jackson – bass
Alex Washam – drums
Craig Collison – vibraphone
David Shade – guitar
Chris Kjorlaug – percussion
Evan Tucker – percussion
Shane Chastain – piano and organ
and
Hairy Larry – Fender Rhodes and vocals

Ten musicians is ambitious, even for NJHB. I say we’re Sun Ra Light or maybe Free Snarky Puppy.

So now, recorded at KASU New Jazz In Jonesboro here’s NJHB playing my song, “The Hop Skip Jump”.

Chris DeClerk – Week Long Dreamer

Thanks Marty today we’re going to hear an Arkansas songwriter sing a song from his new album.

I first met Chris DeClerk when he was playing music with Perry Osborne. Perry is a friend of mine and he helped get Blues Fest rolling playing with Jonesboogie Blues in 1991. I recorded his band, Aloysious, and he played guitar on my “Love Stuff” album. Then he went and hit the big time touring with El Bujo aka Gary Gazaway and Colonel Bruce Hampton. He took his doctorate and is now teaching in Florida.

Perry recorded an album with Chris DeClerk in Florida and he played with Chris as a duo they called DeClerk Osborne. I will post a link to DeClerk Osborne playing in Jonesboro at The Brickhouse.

Around that time is when I met Chris. We visited for a couple of hours at The Edge Coffeehouse and talked about his upcoming Arericana album that he was about to record with Perry and other jazz instructors in Florida. He told me about how when Perry was putting together a band of international jazz musicians for the album he told them it wasn’t jazz, it was Americana, and they said, “We like American music.”

I like to stay in touch so after all these years I was glad to hear about his new album, “Week Long Dreamer”. I don’t care much about genres but I would definitely call this album a rock album with a bit of blues rock spicing up the mix. I have one song for you today, “After The Rain” and I’m playing three more on Something Blue Saturday night. Chris wrote all the songs on the album. It’s on bandcamp so I’ll post a link there so you can hear the whole album

Chris lives in Little Rock but I got to record him for Something Blue just last month. He played with Matt Pierce, another outstanding Jonesboro guitarist, and I look forward to playing those recordings on Something Blue and in a future podcast.

So now, here’s Chris DeClerk singing “After The Rain” from his new album, “Week Long Dreamer”.

Ronnie Presley Live At Blues Fest On September 14, 2008

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original song written by someone I met at The Biscuit.

The best thing about the King Biscuit Blues Festival is Fireman’s Campground. Some people call it Tent City but really it’s the home of Tent City, just one of the many ongoing music parties at the campground. Another one of those is where I camp, in the Helena Handbasket, way down at the end of the road where you can hear the main stage as good as you can anywhere. And another yearly music party was hosted by Ronnie Williams, aka Black Oak Slim.

Now we’re going to take a deep dive into some King Biscuit lore. At Black Oak Slim’s campsite everything was big. Instead of a camp stove he might have a kitchen stove with an oven. Or one of those oversize gas stoves with two burners. And on his stoves would be huge pots of food because they loved to feed people. And instead of a tent he always had a camping vehicle, sometimes a different vehicle but always with the same look. Painted black and white with a diagonal stripe or a lightning bolt. A kind of superhero of the campground look.

Vivian and I loved visiting at Black Oak Slim’s campsite, eating their food an enjoying their company.

parenthetical note (If you knew Vivian you know that she would be feeding people too, cooking up food on our rocket stove. But that’s another bit of lore for a future podcast.) end parenthetical note

Now Black Oak Slim loved music and he always encouraged his guests to break out the guitars, harmonicas, and drums and play. And that’s how I met Ronnie Presley. Playing music with him at Black Oak Slim’s campsite.

Well, no one will be surprised that Black Oak Slim was from the Black Oak, Arkansas area. And Ronnie Presley was from Caraway. Before long we had Ronnie Presley playing at Blues Fest. I think he brought a band once but usually he played an acoustic set, just him singing and playing guitar.

And on September 14, 2008, that’s just what he did. I recorded his set for Something Blue and it was immaculate. He played mostly cover songs but some originals and I picked one of his originals to play for you today.

So here’s Ronnie Presley, recorded live at Blues Fest, playing a song he wrote, “Had The Blues This Sunday Morning”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Yesterday

Jay Shepherd – Guitar

Thanks Marty, today I’m going to play a Beatles song, recently recorded at HairyLarryLand.

I met Jay Shepherd years ago when he played at Blues Fest in the Shugga Shane band and 3MG. I recorded those shows and played them on Something Blue. 3MG featuring Shane Chastain – piano and vocals and Jay Shepherd – guitar and vocals. They would take requests from the audience and play everything from Lady Gaga to Merle Haggard.

After I retired and went back to school I took classes and played in jazz groups with Jay. He even played on my Senior Recital.

At the Delta Jazz Workshop I worked with Jay teaching Jazz Improvisation. He helped me with the small groups I directed. And I recorded his group playing in one of the evening concerts. Great jazz that I have played on KASU many times.

And now I recorded Jay again, just this summer, and he put down an an album of classical and sacred music with one pop song. I bet you don’t have to guess which song I picked to play today.

So now, here’s Jay Shepherd, playing the Beatles song, “Yesterday”, recorded at HairyLarryLand on June 12, 2025.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joe Lee Singing Lazy Gal Blues

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joe Lee Singing Lazy Gal Blues
From the Archives Of Something Blue 2025-07-13

Joe Lee At Jazz Thursday

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear Papa Joe sing his hit, “Lazy Gal Blues”, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

So I had this idea about starting Jazz Thursday with a featured act and then a musician participation act I called The Little Big Band that would read original charts and arrangements. This was a lot of fun and sometimes we had five horns playing in The Little Big Band.

On May 27, 2010, we had three horns, a crack trumpet section featuring Ron Horton, Craig Baker, and John Bartelt. In the rhythm section we had Shane Chastain, piano; Craig Collison, vibes; David Eckert, bass; and I’m on guitar.

All of these musicians were living in the Jonesboro area at the time of the show.

But the highlight of the evening was when Joe Lee sat down at the piano and sang “Lazy Gal Blues”, a song he wrote that gained substantial popularity when he released it on Alley Records.

On this podcast I try to present great Arkansas music and I work hard to get all the details right, knowing that this could be one of the few times that this particular show is covered. Sometimes I get to recover a lost gem.

And that’s how I feel today. Buried in the middle of the set was Papa Joe singing “Lazy Gal Blues”. The performance was great but the mix wasn’t that good. Usually I would skip past it and hope to record it again later.

But Joe Lee is gone and this was my one opportunity to preserve this song with this band.

I remember Craig Baker scratching out the arrangement before the show. Joe played the first solo and then Ron Horton took the second. This might be the only time Ron Horton played this song.

On the recording Joe’s voice was too quiet and the horns were too loud. This is not the first time this has happened with live recordings. Fortunately the arrangement has full band stops for every vocal line so after radical EQ and then boosting the vocal one phrase at a time I got Joe’s voice on top. I fixed a few other things and it’s not the best repair I’ve ever done but it’s the best I could do on this song. I think you will enjoy it. It puts a smile on my face.

So now, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday on May 27, 2010, here’s Joe Lee singing “Lazy Gal Blues”.
