Sarah Vaughn, Lover Man

Welcome to Something Blue. I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues, for you.

Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five, West End Blues
Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra, Night in Tunisia
Charlie Parker, Anthropology

Now that’s what I’m talking about, the best of the best. That was Charlie Parker playing “Anthropology”. Kicking us off tonight we heard Sarah Vaughn sing “Lover Man”. Then Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five did “West End Blues” and Dizzy Gillespie played “Night in Tunisia”.

I recently got an email from The Internet Archive which said, “Last year, we received a generous donation from a family looking for a forever home for their late father’s extensive collection of jazz recordings and 78s. Geoffrey Wheeler, who passed away in 2020, had been the former president of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors. … The Geoffrey A. Wheeler Collection was recently digitized in full by the Archive and made available for others to enjoy, learn from, and share their love of music.”

I am featuring these 78 RPM recordings tonight.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for links to the Geoffrey Wheeler collection and to the songs we’re hearing tonight.

Ok now, here’s Bessie Smith singing “J. C. Holmes Blues”, Erroll Garner playing “Love For Sale”, and Coleman Hawkins with “Spotlite” and “Get Happy; Crazy Rhythm”.

Bessie Smith, J. C. Holmes Blues
Erroll Garner, Love For Sale
Coleman Hawkins’ 52nd Street All Stars, Spotlite
Coleman Hawkins and his Orchestra, Get Happy; Crazy Rhythm

Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra, 52nd Street Theme
Ella Fitzgerald And Her Savoy Eight, All Over Nothing at All
Billie Holiday, Body And Soul
Art Tatum Trio, Dark Eyes

All right now, that’s Art Tatum playing “Dark Eyes”. Before that we heard Dizzy Gillespie do the “52nd Street Theme”, Ella Fitzgerald sang “All Over Nothing at All” and Billie Holiday sang “Body And Soul”.

Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org.

I’m Hairy Larry, host of Something Blue. Thanks to the Internet Archive at archive.org for their wonderful work digitizing these classic songs.

Closing the show here’s Billie Holiday singing “Lover Come Back to Me” and Duke Ellington and his Orchestra playing “Black, Brown, And Beige”.
