DJ Hairy Larry Presents Charlotte Taylor and Gypsy Rain playing “Hi Roller”.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original song recorded at KASU Blue Monday in Paragould.

Charlotte Taylor is an Arkansas blues lady. Playing mostly in the Little Rock area I’m always glad when I get to hear her in Helena, Newport, or Paragould. That’s right! On April 20, 2009, Charlotte Taylor and Gypsy Rain played at the Red Goose Deli in Paragould, Arkansas, thanks to the KASU Blue Monday concert series.

Charlotte and her band, Gypsy Rain, are a top Arkansas blues act, playing regularly at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas. I would see her every year at The Biscuit and a couple of times I got to play for her with Delta Legends or The Emporium Orkestra.

I first met Charlotte Taylor on the internet when we added her to Delta Boogie. I think the Blue Monday gig in Paragould was the first time I saw her in person.

She sang great with a great band. They have a lot of variety with their blues. The song I picked to play today has a lot of jazz in it. And it’s a Charlotte Taylor original!

So here she is now, introducing her own song at the Red Goose Deli on April 20, 2009.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks playing “Gotta Lotta”

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear one of my jazz pieces played by Bebop Beatniks at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

The ASU Jazz Department holds the Delta Jazz Workshop during the summer, right here at ASU. Every evening they have a jazz concert and before the pandemic, Bebop Beatniks held down the Wednesday night slot. On July 10, 2019, we played one of my songs called “Gotta Lotta”.

I was on piano. Also playing were Jay Shepherd, guitar; Emily Lindley, vibes; Jeremy Jackson, bass; and Alex Washam, drums. All of the musicians are from Northeast Arkansas and most of them studied jazz at ASU.

The song features Jay and I trading choruses and inspiring each other with our improvisation.

This song was released in December, 2022, as track 1 on the new Bebop Beatniks live album, “Church”. The album is a retrospective of Bebop Beatniks originals recorded from 2016 through 2019. We recorded the studio album, “Leaves” but we never released a live album before which was just wrong because Bebop Beatniks has always been primarily a live band.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Vikki McGee Playing Scarlet Begonias

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a Grateful Dead song played at the Arkansas Roots Festival.

I was at the first Delta Blues Symposium and Vivian and I helped them with music for several years. And then you get busy and you grow apart so I was really glad when KASU started presenting the music for the Delta Blues Symposium at the Arkansas Roots Festival. It was like being reacquainted with old friends.

In 2017 The Vikki McGee Three were scheduled and I was excited when I found out they had added my favorite duo. So I was recording and taking pictures and enjoying Vikki McGee, Sonny Campbell, Jacob Brumley, John Parks, and Sarah Jo Roark, all fine Arkansas musicians.

They knew I’m a deadhead and they called me out and said they had added a song just for me. And out burst “Scarlet Begonias”, one of the Grateful Dead’s live show standards.

Well, that was great and of course I was dancing. There’s no party better than a dancing party with live music.

So now, recorded April 8, 2017, with John Parks singing lead over Jacob Brumley’s fantastic drum work and everyone on the beautiful harmonies here’s Vikki McGee and her band singing “Scarlet Begonias”.

Thanks Marty, this week on From The Archives we’re featuring a Hawaiian Christmas song recorded at KASU Jazz For The Holidays.

Jazz For The Holidays is always a great show. On December 7, 2019 The band was joined by Sam Ahia, Lisa’s father. Sam is a well known Hawaiian jazz guitarist.

They did a couple of Hawaiian songs and I’m playing one today and one on the this week’s Something Blue show. It really lit a light for me to hear these Hawaiian songs sung by Hawaiians in Pocahontas, Arkansas.

Besides Lisa and Sam Ahia we’ll hear Gary Gazaway – trumpet, Joy Sanford – piano, Tim Crouch – violin, Robert Bowlin – guitar’ David Eckert – bass, and John Long – drums.

“Mele Kalikimaka” was written by R. Alex Anderson in 1949. According to Wikipedia “Bing Crosby was a frequent visitor and golf partner of Anderson. Anderson played the song for Crosby, who liked it so much that he surprised Anderson with the 1950 recording.”

And so we’re playing a Hawaiian Christmas song on Arkansas Roots. At the time of the recording all of the musicians were living in Arkansas. And, of course, it was recorded at KASU Jazz For The Holidays in Pocahontas, Arkansas.

From The Archive March 28, 2021/December 11, 2022 – Jazz Alliance – “12 Bar Bruise”

Thanks Marty, this week on From The Archives we’re featuring some jazz recorded right here in Jonesboro.

I was enjoying a Jazz Alliance performance at The Edge Coffeehouse after I retired and on break I was talking to Janie Overall who told me that at ASU the state pays the tuition for senior citizens, 60 or over. So I can say that it was Jazz Alliance that brought me back to ASU where I took Percussion lessons from Craig Collison and Jazz Improv from Ron Horton. Soon after that I resumed my composition studies and resumed hosting Something Blue at KASU.

Ron Horton wrote some great songs and I began recording their live performances collecting the tracks that ended up on their “Partly Cloudy” CD. Playing on the CD are Ron Horton, trumpet; Craig Collison, vibes; David Eckert, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. They helped me start the KASU Jazz Thursday concerts and also played at Bebopalooza! Their personnel have strong connections to ASU and the public library.

They were a great band and I have featured them many times on Something Blue, mostly playing jazz standards recorded at public performances. This week I am featuring originals written by Ron Horton. Here’s Jazz Alliance now playing “12 Bar Bruise”.
