DJ Hairy Larry presents the Over The Hill Gang playing “Basin Street Blues”

DJ Hairy Larry presents the Over The Hill Gang playing “Basin Street Blues”

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents the Over The Hill Gang at KASU Jazz Thursday

02. Something Blue – Lover Man – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some classic jazz recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

The Over The Hill Gang performed around Jonesboro for many years. Their repertoire included Dixieland, Ragtime, Swing, Blues, and Gospel. I knew some of the musicians in the band and I thought they would be a good fit for Jazz Thursday.

So on July 28, 2011, they played for us at Bellaz restaurant right here in Jonesboro and they gave us a great show playing songs like “Sweet Georgia Brown”, “All Of Me”, “God Bless The Child”, and “Georgia”.

The featured musicians were Tom Mason – clarinet, John Barttelt – trumpet, Neale Bartee – trombone, Harriet O’Neal – piano, Day Arnoult – vocals, Craig Collison – drums, Bill Keisker – bass, and Mike Bridges – guitar. All very fine musicians who brought a spirit of jazz history to their show.

Harriet was my piano teacher. Three times. I took lessons from her for several years when I first came to ASU. Then I took private lessons from her when I returned to complete my music education. And then once again she was my ASU piano instructor when she returned to teach. After that I continued visiting her several times a year until the lockdown and she always asked me to play. She passed on when she was 85 years old. I still love her and I miss her.

Harriet’s daughter, Day Arnault, sang with the Over The Hill Gang at this concert. I picked an instrumental number to play today which means I can return to this concert on a future podcast to feature Day singing.

So now, recorded on July 28, 2011, at KASU Jazz Thursday, here’s the Over The Hill Gang playing “Basin Street Blues”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Giant Steps playing “Black Orpheus”

DJ Hairy Larry presents Giant Steps playing “Black Orpheus”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Giant Steps at KASU Jazz Thursday

02. Something Blue – Amber – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re featuring a bossa recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

The core group of Giant Steps was Craig Baker, trumpet; Joy Sanford, piano; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. For Jazz Thursday they added Michael McGowan on tenor sax to fill out their quintet. These are all seasoned jazz professionals who lived and worked in Northeast Arkansas. Michael McGowan traveled in from Texas but he is a former Jonesboro resident.

May 23, 2013, was the first I met Michael McGowan. Since then I have been privileged to work and play with him at the Delta Jazz Workshop where he helped me rehearse a student small group and joined Bebop Beatniks for our Wednesday night performance. He is an amazing saxophonist as you are about to hear.

I have worked with the other members of Giant Steps many times, most memorably recording Joe Lee’s album, “Boppin At The Forest”. I even got to sit in with them one night on bass. I went to hear them play and it turns out they were short a bassist. So I took a short trip to HairyLarryLand to pick up my bass equipment and had a real good time.

“Manhã de Carnaval” translates to “Carnival Morning” and it was written by Luiz Bonfá, a Brazilian composer. It is credited as being one of the first bossa nova jazz tunes that popularized bossa in America. Also known as “A Day in the Life of a Fool” it was the theme song for the movie, “Black Orpheus”. Jazz musicians picked up on it and in jazz circles it is commonly referred to as “Black Orpheus”. Prepandemic it was in the Bebop Beatniks repertoire and I also have recordings of Suzanne Michell playing the song on piano.

So now, recorded on May 23, 2013, at KASU Jazz Thursday here’s Giant Steps playing “Black Orpheus”.

02. Something Blue – Season – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a bebop legend playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band.

Before Joe Lee passed I used to go to his house in the afternoon to digitize songs he had dug out of his archive. He always had a story about the musicians and the shows so I got my own personal From The Archives done Joe Lee style.

One week he told me about the time the Jonesboro Jazz Society brought Dizzy Gillespie to town to play. Before the show Joe was talking to Dizzy in the green room and Joe said, “We’re playing one of your songs tonight and we’d be glad to have you play a solo.” He told me that Dizzy demurred saying that he had his thing with his band and he wanted to do that show. Joe told me it was a long shot but worth the try.

The Jazz Society Big Band was hot that night and they were playing great. They started Dizzy’s composition strong and while Joe was playing his solo the crowd exploded. Joe thought wow and when he turned and saw Dizzy he laughed out loud. Dizzy played a great solo, of course, and then you can hear an inspired Mike Overall playing the drum setup into the shout chorus.

I mean how many times do you get to play with Dizzy Gillespie?

So, here we go with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band featuring guest soloist Dizzy Gillespie playing “Manteca”.

02. Something Blue – Kid – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing some original delta blues recorded right here in Jonesboro.

Billy Lee Riley was a true Arkansas legend, starting his career at Sun Studio in the fifties and making more hits and playing on other people’s hits in the sixties, seventies, and eighties. Then in the nineties he had two hit blues albums, “Hot Damn!” and “Shade Tree Blues”. So I was more than pleased when he agreed to play at the 5 Decades Of Great Music fundraiser for the Craighead Forest Bandshell on May 25, 2000.

Besides Billy Lee Riley we also featured delta legends Joe Lee and Matt Lucas who also had 5 decades under their belt. Joe Lee played a jazz set, then Billy Lee Riley played the blues. We had an Allstar band where I got to play with all three of them. And then Matt Lucas took us home with a contemporary rockabilly act, Crossfire, and Billy Lee Riley hit the stage again singing his classic rock and roll recorded at Sun in the fifties.

It was a great show and everybody had a real good time. Today we’re going to hear a Billy Lee Riley original, recorded at 5 Decades Of Great Music, called “How Come We All Ain’t Got The Same”. So here’s Billy Lee Riley now introducing his own song.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd
02. Something Blue – Ladybugs – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear John Shepherd joining me livestreaming on Twitch.

I am featuring jazz guitarists on Something Blue this week so I thought I would talk about playing jazz with John Shepherd on the Twitch Porch.

John and I go back to the early nineties. He was a Blues Fest regular always headlining for us. One thing about Blues Fest that isn’t true about most festivals is we always stayed on time. The trick to that is telling the bands when their time is up. But I always gave John Shepherd the headline performance so he could play as long as he wanted.

I got to play with John a few times at Blues Fest. And then we started a band together with Jeremy Burnett on harp. We called the band Delta Legends and besides playing in Northeast Arkansas we played on the Cedell Davis stage at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena every year.

We even got to record with Matt Lucas one time at HairyLarryLand when Matt and Barbara came to visit with Vivian and myself.

And then the pandemic happened and since we’re old Vivian and I went into lockdown and that shut down my live performances.

My daughter Megan started gaming on Twitch and I had to keep up so I started my own Twitch channel where I would play chill jazz piano. I wrote the songs and then I wrote horn parts and then I turned our front porch into the Twitch Porch and started playing again, outdoors, with Bebop Beatniks and Jazz Buskers.

On April 10, 2022, John Shepherd joined me on the Twitch Porch and we played four of my jazz originals. The videos are on Youtube, I’ll include links on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com. John and I had a great time so I thought I would play an extended blues with a nice slow groove for you today.

Ok now, here’s John Shepherd joining me on the Twitch Porch on April 10, 2022, playing a real belly rubber, “Low Earth Orbit”.
