DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing Blues Train

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing Blues Train
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-12-10

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original blues song recorded right here in Jonesboro at HairyLarryLand.

There are two stories that go with this song. John Shepherd was a Blues Fest regular playing every year with his band. Then one year he started his set solo, with just guitar and vocals, before he brought his band onstage. Vivian commented on how much she liked the solo part of his set so I talked to John about doing an album that way, just guitar and vocals. We recorded the album on February 21, 2009 and March 21, 2009.

Now for the second story. When John showed up for the session he came in carrying a guitar case. When he opened the case he pulled out a Pignose amp.

That’s right, the amp fit right in the guitar case. The Pignose is a battery powered guitar amp that delivers 3 watts of pure blues power. As you will hear John could make it walk and talk.

I wanted to record the vocals and guitar tracks with good isolation so I stuck the amp in another room and close miked the little speaker. John’s vocal mic went into one channel on my Zoom recorder and the guitar was on the other channel. I have pictures and recording details on the albums webpage, I’ll post a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

John Shepherd is from Wynne, Arkansas. The whole album was recorded live in the studio, right here in Jonesboro. All originals by John Shepherd. John sang and played guitar. We called the album “So Low”, two words, with the hidden meaning of solo, one word.

Ok now, here’s John Shepherd playing “Blues Train” from his album, “So Low”, recorded in Jonesboro, Arkansas, in 2009.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Steve Wages Playing It’s All My Fault

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-12-03

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some blues guitar recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

Steve Wages was an exceptional blues guitarist and it was always a pleasure to hear him perform at the bandshell. The Bad Habit Band was a top cover band so they played everything, rock, country, and blues but you could always tell that Steve would get really cranked up for a blues song.

Also playing in Bad Habit were Braden Byrd, bass, and Billy Spence, drums. All three of them played for years in Northeast Arkansas. So this is the real blues, homegrown in the Delta.

Billy Spence was a Blues Fest regular. You never knew who he was going to play with. He even played for us in the Bobby Lee Trammel touring band reunion. Braden Byrd also played at Blues Fest with Houston Steele.

So now, recorded on May 27, 2007 at the Craighead Forest Bandshell here’s Steve Wages and Bad Habit playing “It’s My Own Fault”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jeannie And The Guys Playing Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-11-26

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear one of my favorite bands sing a blues song that was a hit in 1949.

I first learned the song “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” on the Electric Flag album released in the sixties. “The song charted on the US R&B charts by three different artists in 1949, Stick McGhee’s version … reached , Wynonie Harris’s hit #4 and Lionel Hampton went up to #13.”* It’s also a popular country and jug band song, let’s face it, people just love singing wine, wine, wine.

Jeannie and The Guys came out of Northeast Arkansas rock and roll roots but they played everything, rock, soul, country, and R&B. Their version of “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” features Zyndall Wayne Raney on vocals and piano. Also playing were Jeannie Hendrix – drums, Doug Greeno – bass, Marcus Grady – guitar, and Dale Turner – guitar. They all sing.

I recorded them for Something Blue at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on July 13, 2010. Later in the show they invited me up to blow some blues harp with them. I’ll be playing that song on Something Blue.

So now, here’s Jeannie and The Guys doing “Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee”. What a treat.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Low Earth Orbit

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Low Earth Orbit
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-11-20

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some honky tonk jazz recorded live at Blues Fest.

I just finished our new jazz album, Bebop Beatniks Live At Blues Fest, so I’m featuring Bebop Beatniks on From The Archives and on Something Blue this week. Just remember, you heard it here first, on KASU. I dug way forward in the archives to bring you these songs, pre-release.

I wrote “Low Earth Orbit” in 2018 and NJHB played it on September 1, 2018 at New Jazz In Jonesboro in the Jonesboro Public Library’s Round Room.

I liked the song so much I moved it into my streaming repertoire and then onto the Bebop Beatniks short list. We’ve been playing it about a year but I don’t think we ever played it as good as we did at Blues Fest.

Featuring the incomparable Tyler Remagen on saxophone he nails it. Listen as he plays. Sometimes his tone is so strong that the sax just jumps right out of the radio and into the room.

Also playing you will hear Jeremy Jackson – bass, Alex Washam – drums, Conley Hunt – percussion, and I’m on piano. All fine Northeast Arkansas musicians.

Ok now, here’s Bebop Beatniks playing “Low Earth Orbit” at Blues Fest on September 24, 2023.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Paul Richardson Playing Kellys Blues

Carl Abraham, Paul Richardson, Corey Emerson

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-11-11

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a piano trio playing the blues at KASU Jazz Thursday.

I met Paul Richardson at the piano store hanging out flyers for Blue Fest 91, the first Blues Fest. He said he had a group that would like to play, Jonesboogie Blues, so I booked them on the spot. I wasn’t really expecting him to bring a grand piano but he did and they played a great set. I have recordings, somewhere in the archive, so now I’m going to have to dig them out for a future podcast. Like a lot of jobs, the more work I do the more work I have to do.

Paul continued helping us with Blues Fest through all 25 years. He was also a frequent guest with Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians. He even came and played at the church one Wednesday night. So when I started booking KASU Jazz Thursday I got in touch with him right away.

On June 24, 2010, he was our featured act. Then he stayed to play with the Adhoc Combo. Playing with Paul, that night, was Corey Emerson, bass and Carl Abraham, Drums. All three were living in Northeast Arkansas at the time, each with storied music careers in the area.

They opened their set with “Kelly’s Blues” and that’s what we’re going to hear now. Here’s Paul Richardson with Corey Emerson and Carl Abraham playing “Kelly’s Blues” at KASU Jazz Thursday.
