The Album grant Garland

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear the title track of one of the best albums of all time recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.

I recorded Grant Garland live at KASU Bluesday Tuesday on September 14, 2009. He brought an amazing band, they delivered the goods, and I was fortunate to get some of the best recordings I have ever made at a KASU event.

Playing with Grant was Rob Alley, trumpet; Derek Doyle, bass; and Ben White, drums. They played two sets, both of them immaculate, and they brought an eclectic mix of originals and covers from a wide variety of genres.

Now “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye is an amazing recording of a chart topping song. There’s so much going on all the time that you can get lost in the nuance. Even the sound of people partying in the background is musical.

For a quartet to deliver on a song as complex as this takes deep musical chops. After all Marvin Gaye had a studio full of professionals working with him and spending as much time as it took to get the song just right.

Grant Garland’s quartet played it live, start to finish, their own version, of course, and somehow they nailed it, bringing a different take on a song everybody already knows.

There’s no music like live music and it don’t get no better than this.

Here’s Grant Garland singing “What’s Going On”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing All Blues

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing All Blues
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2026-01-25

Jay Shepherd Live At The Delta Jazz Workshop

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear a Miles Davis song recorded right here at ASU at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

“All Blues” was written by Miles Davis and was first released in 1959 on the most popular jazz album of all time, “Kind Of Blue”. “All Blues” is a blues with it’s own sound, in 6/8 instead of 4/4, and using all 7th chords with an off chord at the turnaround. Jazz musicians love to improvise on “All Blues”. It’s so familiar and so interesting.

On July 12, 2016, Jay Shepherd played “All Blues” in the ASU Fine Arts Recital Hall as part of the jazz department’s Delta Jazz Workshop. Featured on piano on this song we will hear Jay’s partner in crime, Shane Chastain.

Now, Shane and Jay are back together again in a new band, Silver Wings, and I hope to record them again for Something Blue.

In December, 2025, I released this concert as a live album, “Jay Shepherd Live At The Delta Jazz Workshop”. It’s great, all the way through. I’ll post a link to it on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Playing at the concert were:

Jay Shepherd – guitar
Tyler Worsham – piano
Shane Chastain – piano
Terrell Montgomery – bass
and
Keyven Dunn – drums

All of them are from Northeast Arkansas.

So now, recorded on July 12, 2016, here’s Jay Shepherd Playing “All Blues”.

Bebop Beatniks – Leaves

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original jazz song recorded at HairyLarryLand.

Bebop Beatniks has always been a live band, playing several times a month at local venues. We have a ton of live shows on the internet at the Live Music Archive and we’ve released several albums, but only one studio album, “Leaves”.

And, of course, it’s a concept album featuring a reading from “Leaves Of Grass” by Walt Whitman, “Autumn Leaves”, a song by Paul Nunis called “At The Speed Of Love”, and three other original songs.

Today I’m going to feature a song by Sid Davis called “Sweatshirt” which quickly became one of our favorite jam tunes when playing live. It features an intro by Tyler Remagen on tenor sax and then it cooks all the way through. It’s a twelve bar blues which makes it great for improvisation.

Playing on the album are

Sid Davis – trumpet
Tyler Remagen – sax and flute
Emily Lindley – vibraphone
Alex Washam – drums and xylophone
Paul Nunis – bass and vocals
and
Hairy Larry – piano, vocals, and spoken word

All former students in the jazz program at ASU except for Paul who was on the faculty.

It’s a romp all the way through. I’ll post a link to the album at sbblues.com.

Ok now, here’s Bebop Beatniks playing the Sid Davis song, “Sweatshirt”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Suzanne Michelle Singing St. James Infirmary Blues

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Suzanne Michelle Singing St. James Infirmary Blues
From The Archives Of Something Blue – January 11, 2026

Suzanne Michell

Thanks Marty, on Something Blue this week I’m playing jazz songs new to the public domain in 2026, so today I’m playing a public domain song recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

On May 11, 2008, we closed the show with my favorite type of music. Campfire music.

“Hairy Larry Jams played two sets at our opening concert for 2008. An electric set kicked off the show. Then we closed true acoustic around a campfire. No mics, no amps, no nothing.”

The true acoustic set featured

Hairy Larry, guitar and harmonica
Fred Wilson, guitar and harmonica
Suzanne Michell, guitar
Chris “Stinger” Stevens, guitar
Megan Heyl, handclaps

Everybody sang.

Chris Stevens is from Illinois. The rest of us are Arkansawyers.

And Suzanne sang “St. James Infirmary Blues” a public domain song of mixed parentage that Louis Armstrong recorded in the roaring twenties.

So now here’s Suzanne Michell singing “St. James Infirmary Blues”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Spain

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Spain
From The Archive Of Something Blue – 2026-01-04

Jay Shepherd Live At The Delta Jazz Workshop

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a fantastic jazz song recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

“Spain”, by Chick Corea, is a jazz standard he composed in 1971 and released on “Light As A Feather”, an album recorded by his jazz fusion band, Return To Forever. It was an immediate hit and has since been covered many times in both instrumental and vocal versions.

While it is very catchy it’s not the easiest song to play.

On July 12, 2016, Jay Shepherd brought his band to play in the A-State Fine Arts Recital Hall as part of the Delta Jazz Workshop. They delivered a sterling set which I have featured on Something Blue before.

After Jay and I did his classical album, “Millenium Fair”, last year, I sent him an email about releasing a live jazz album with the songs they played that night. He was onboard and so on New Year’s Eve, 2025, the stars aligned and I released “Jay Shepherd Live At The Delta Jazz Workshop”.

Playing on the album were:

Jay Shepherd – guitar
Tyler Worsham – piano
Shane Chastain – piano
Terrell Montgomery – bass
and
Keyven Dunn – drums

All fine outstanding Northeast Arkansas musicians. Which you will hear for yourselves in just a minute.

I will post a link to the album on the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

Ok now, recorded for Something Blue on July 12, 2016, here’s Jay Shepherd playing the Chick Corea song, “Spain”.
