DJ Hairy Larry presents Big Red and The Soul Benders playing “They Call Me Big Mama”.

Thanks Marty, today we’ll hear Big Red sing a Big Mama Thorton song at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport.

I met Kelly and Mike jamming at Blues Fest and at the King Biscuit Blues Festival. They put together a fantastic blues act called Big Red and The Soul Benders so I was happy to hear I would get to record them at Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas. When I was setting up my microphones I got another surprise. They had brought Jawbone from Jawbone and Jolene to play harmonica. Jawbone and Jolene had also played at Blues Fest several times so it was great to hear him again. It’s a small blues world in Arkansas.

Step forward a few years and I was down at The Biscuit and my friend Black Oak Slim invited me to take a walk. We went down to Cherry Street and he took me into a club on the corner. And there was Kelly and Mike, it was their club and they had a piano picker playing music. When he took a break they invited me to play. I borrowed a guitar and did the best I could.

I was sad to hear several years later that their club had burned down.

Kelly, aka Big Red, knows what the job of a blueswoman is. Sure, you have to sing. But more importantly you have to reach your audience and entertain. Here’s Big Red and The Soul Benders recorded live at KASU Bluesday Tuesday on May 11, 2010, singing the Big Mama Thornton song, “They Call Me Big Mama”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Jazz Alliance playing “Blues In A Hurry”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Alliance
02. Something Blue – Walker – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some original jazz recorded right here in Jonesboro.

It was Jazz Alliance that brought me back to ASU to complete my music education. I was attending their shows at The Edge Coffeehouse and one night I was talking to Janie Overall and she told me about the Silver Scholar program in Arkansas where the state pays the tuition of students over 60. I had taken percussion in the eighties including Marimba lessons and I just loved working with the mallets. So I talked to Mr. Collison and signed up for lessons. I also signed up for jazz improv lessons with Dr. Horton, Director of Jazz Studies at ASU. And from there I went on to composition, theory, performance, conducting, all of the great things you learn in music school.

While all of this was going on I recorded a Jazz Alliance album, “Partly Cloudy”. Featuring Ron Horton, trumpet, Craig Collison, percussion; Dave Eckert and Derek Doyle, bass; and Mike Overall, drums; the album was recorded at live concerts over a period of months. It was worth the effort, the album is a gem featuring songs written by Ron Horton. It memorializes the band with a permanent record of the music they made.

I also want to give a shout out to my friend and teacher, Craig Collison who just retired from his position as Director of Percussion at ASU. He brought me back to ASU and then last December I graduated and this Spring he retired.

I have been playing with drummers that he taught for the last 12 years and I have to say they are all excellent musicians. The skill of the student is a tribute to the teacher.

So now, from their “Partly Cloudy” album here’s Jazz Alliance playing the Ron Horton song, “Blues In A Hurry”, recorded at Gracie’s Place in Jonesboro, Arkansas on May 14, 2010.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Suzanne Michell playing “Tenderly”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Suzanne Michell
02. Something Blue – Human – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a jazz standard played on a Steinway Baby Grand.

Suzanne and Fred have played for us regularly at Blues Fest, Bebopalooza, New Jazz In Jonesboro, they even came up from Little Rock to sing at my Senior Recital. Suzanne is a musician and an educator who gave private lessons from her studio in Little Rock. Besides teaching guitar and vocals Suzanne also plays and teaches piano.

When Fred had a chance to acquire a baby grand through an inheritance it was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. First the piano had to go to Steinway for a refurbish. And then it had to be moved to Little Rock. It’s the kind of instrument that really sets off a studio both visually as well as with that great Steinway sound. There’s a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to some pictures Fred took of the piano.

I went to Little Rock for a weekend to record Suzanne playing her Steinway Baby Grand. She played originals, traditional songs, and jazz standards. Suzanne is the kind of musician that doesn’t just play the notes. She plays the overtones, something Fred Hersch discusses on his Youtube videos. I did my best to get the sound of the piano in the room onto the recordings.

So now, recorded by Suzanne Michell in December of 2008, here’s the jazz standard, “Tenderly”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents NJHB playing “Neo Soul Jam ”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB
02. Something Blue – Heart – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing some Neo Soul recorded at the Jonesboro Public Library.

New Jazz In Jonesboro moved to the Round Room where we played three seasons in 2018 and 2019. Our first show at the library was on September 1, 2018. NJHB plays all original songs and Joseph Curtis brought in a great new chart called “Neo Soul Jam ”.

Playing on the song were Joseph Curtis – trumpet, Hunter Durham – trumpet, David Hall – woodwinds, Emily Lindley – vibes, Tyler Worsham – piano, Alex Washam – drums, and Hairy Larry – bass. Every one of us took jazz at ASU and we’re all from Northeast Arkansas.

There were no rehearsals. Joseph brought the chart in and we put it up on the music stands and played it. In true NJHB tradition we improvised the arrangement, not just the solos. Improvisation is the core of jazz musicianship and sometimes when something is new and exciting the musicians step up and deliver. And, as you will hear, that’s exactly what happened.

Now, recorded on September 1, 2018, here’s the Joseph Curtis song, “Neo Soul Jam ”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Moore’s Code playing “Give Me The Night”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Moore’s Code
02. Something Blue – 29 – Happy second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a George Benson song recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday right here in Jonesboro.

I met Tim Moore when he was in High School jamming with Jazz Alliance at The Edge Coffeehouse. When he came to ASU I worked with him more, playing with him some but mostly recording his band, Caprice. Tim and I coproduced the Caprice album “from dawn til dusk” and then he left Jonesboro and finished his degree at North Texas State.

He was still a bandleader and he put together a group called Moore’s Code. I booked them to play at Jazz Thursday on May 15, 2014. Since he was in Jonesboro he augmented the band with more Northeast Arkansas musicians and they put on quite a show.

Some of the musicians playing with him that night were ASU students, Alex Ditto, guitar; Cody Ballard and Clinton Curtis, sax; Kevin Tinker, trumpet; Addison Boling, drums; and Matt Bounds, bass. Tim Moore was on piano and here they are now playing “Give Me The Night”, the title track on Gorge Benson’s 1980s hit album.
