Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear the real blues recorded for Something Blue in Newport, Arkansas.
It was August 20, 2019, and it was hot and threatening rain. They had moved the Monster Grooves concert formerly known as Bluesday Tuesday indoors and we were glad. Because it was hot as August in Arkansas.
Mike Doyle and I had traveled south to see Gerry Moss, a storied bluesman. Moss was joined by Jerry Bone, bass and Danny Dozier, guitar presenting an all star lineup. All Arkansas musicians they did not disappoint. In fact they cooked all the way through their show.
Gerry Moss had helped us out at Blues Fest and he also played for the Jonesboro Blues Society. Jerry Bone and Danny Dozier have played at KASU events many times. It was a night for blues history.
The place was packed and everyone had a real good time. There was even a bit of dancing going on. And the band just kept on delivering the goods.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to play one of my original songs recorded by my family band, Hairy Larry and the Flying Hungarians.
My friend, Mike ‘Whisker Fish’ Dollins, sent me an over the top press release for his appearance at our festival May 20, 2007. He said the stars are all in align and we’re all gonna kick it out and jam some twelve bar boogie at 3:00 pm May 20 and it may even bring peace on earth.
So that inspired me to write “Blues For Peace”.
This was during a time when I was producing a lot of Youtube videos so I got my daughter Megan and my friend Randy Gambill to help me make a video. We found a nice place in the front yard with pine trees in the background and about 15 minutes later the video was in the can. I had it up on Youtube the same day.
Some guys in Israel were starting a website, bluesforpeace.com, and they asked my permission to use my song on their homepage. Of course, I said yes and yay hooray, it’s another international hit for Hairy Larry.
Featured on the studio version of the song are Hairy Larry – guitars, harmonica, percussion, and vocals; Randy Gambill – drums and vocals; Carl Heyl – bass; and Megan Heyl – percussion and vocals.
Kier Heyl played drums on the rest of the album. We all live in Northeast Arkansas.
Unfortunately the song has become pertinent once again. In the liner notes I wrote “We all mean it when we sing “Blues For Peace” and we hope and pray that this small statement has some effect.”

Thanks Marty, today we’ll hear one of my original compositions played at The Round Room in the Jonesboro Public Library.
New Jazz In Jonesboro had a successful season at The Arts@311 in 2013. Then in 2018 I restarted the program at The Round Room and thanks to Mark Smith we got KASU on board helping with publicity.
On November 10, 2018, NJHB, the New Jazz House Band, played four of my original compositions, three of them being played for the first time in public. Because that’s how NJHB rolls. We just put a brand new chart up on the music stands and then we improvise the whole arrangement, not just the solos.
The last piece of the evening was “Artificial Gravity” and playing on the song in solo order are Cody Ballard – tenor, Jon Vickers – alto, Gabe Waters – bass clarinet, Tyler Remagen – tenor, Hairy Larry – piano, Spencer Rawlins – bass, and Alex Washam – drums, all ASU Jazz Students and alumni.
We had two more seasons in The Round Room in 2019 and then we were shut down by the pandemic in 2020, a time that has been hard for all of us but especially hard for performing musicians. Then last year I started livesteaming my chill jazz piano compositions on twitch and last fall I played a couple of shows at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. Now that it’s nearly Spring, and omicron is on the wane, I look forward to playing at the bandshell and at Beatles Park in Walnut Ridge and, who knows, maybe getting the band back together for more New Jazz In Jonesboro.

Thanks Marty, this week we’re hearing a jazz standard played by our favorite pianist that I recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.
I can’t count the number of times Joy Sanford has helped KASU playing piano at live music events. She played in The Little Big Band, The Adhoc Combo, with Gary Gazaway and Lisa Ahia, and Jazz Alliance. She accompanied Delta Vox at Bebopalooza and she helped frequently with our Jazz Thursday concerts. She also played at the Delta Jazz Workshop which I recorded for Something Blue.
When I was booking Jazz Thursday I thought, “Joy plays for us all the time. We should do a show to feature her.” So on February 24, 2011, our featured act was Joy Sanford.
Playing with Joy were Ron Horton, trumpet; Tom Mason, bass; and Craig Collison, drums. At the time both Ron and Craig were teaching at ASU. Tom Mason, was born in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, and he has played in Northeast Arkansas for fifty years.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a reggae song recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
As we have been hearing on From The Archives Of Something Blue I tried to record every act playing at the bandshell. In 2014 I added video recording taping one or two original songs with a single hand held camera for several acts. This ended up working out well even though it was a little tricky during the filming because there was no B roll to cover up mistakes.
On May 18, 2014, I made a video of Striding The Blast playing James Carvell’s composition, “Just Another Reggae Love Song”. Playing on the piece are James Carvell – guitar and vocals, Joey Hankins – vocals, and Jason Davis – percussion.
I asked James about the song and he said, “I started writing the song several years ago at about 2:00 in the morning after leaving an acoustic reggae show in Springfield, Missouri. I had such a good time at that show that I decided to write my own reggae song. I’ve always been a fan of the genre, but had never attempted to write my own song in the style. Over the next couple of days it evolved into a reggae love song. To be honest, it started out as a fun, joke song, but it turned out to be one of my favorite songs that I have written. It’s always fun to perform live.”
