Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a jazz standard played at KASU Jazz Thursday.

Brandon Moore only spent one year in the ASU Jazz Program but it was a very eventful year. Brandon and his brother Tim rehearsed the band Caprice and I was able to record their recital in the band room. They played so good that I booked them for KASU Jazz Thursday on January 24, 2013. They played a great show and it wasn’t much later that they talked to me about recording the Caprice album, “from dawn til dusk”, which has become a favorite here at KASU.

After a year at ASU Brandon went on to continue his jazz studies at North Texas State and now he teaches, composes, and plays at Nashville, Tennessee. On Something Blue this week I will feature some of his current work.

At their Jazz Thursday show they played mostly standards including this great version of the Erroll Garner song “Misty”, featuring Brandon Moore on saxophone.

Thanks Marty, this week we’re going to talk about my Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas project.

Sometimes I dig around in the archives and play a song recorded over ten years ago. Sometimes the archive was recorded just last week.

The pandemic has made it difficult to gig, so a little over a year ago I started livestreaming chill jazz piano on Twitch and excerpting the better performances to make Youtube videos. Recently I’ve been performing outside working with a couple of different livestreaming setups. Less is more and I am now able to livestream using just my Galaxy S10 playing my Roland Go Piano.

So Vivian and I like to go for a drive sometimes to get out of the house and enjoy the scenery. There’s a lot of beautiful scenery in Northeast Arkansas so I got the idea of Guerilla Livestreaming with beautiful nature shots as my background.

Just last week, on June 2, 2022, I performed a Guerilla Livestream in my backyard in front of a large bed of orange flowers. The last song I played was a bossa I wrote called “Malaysia” and before I played the song I talked to my livestream audience about this new project.

So I’m going to turn it over to myself, Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Mike McLeod playing “A Hard One”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Mike McLeod
02. Something Blue – Wolves – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, this week we’re featuring a song written by an Arkansas songwriter and recorded at HairyLarryLand.

Mike McLeod, from Imboden, Arkansas, was a regular performer at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. He was always popular with the audience singing in the style of Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet. He would also get everyone to sing along on “Cover Of The Rolling Stone”.

Sandwiched in between his popular covers he would play original songs and public domain material. So I approached him about recording an album at HairyLarryLand and he was definitely up for it.

We recorded the album in one session with Mike playing harmonica on a rack and acoustic guitar while he sang seven songs. There’s something about playing songs for a live audience to develop performance chops that makes life easier in the studio. These songs were all recorded “live in the studio”, exactly like a live performance with no edits or overdubs.

We called the album “Going Home” and there’s a link to it on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

I am featuring some edgier songwriters on Something Blue this week so I picked a song with a strong lyric to play for you today.

Now, recorded at HairyLarryLand on October 24, 2009, here’s Mike McLeod singing his original song, “A Hard One”.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some blues rock recorded at Blues Fest.

Shugga Shane, Jay Shepherd, and Charles Jones played many times at the Craighead Forest Bandshell, first as The Shugga Shane Band and then as Three Minute Genius. They were always crowd pleasers playing songs the audience knew and loved. On September 20, 2009, they also featured a guest vocalist, Maja.

These fine musicians not only play great they also know how to entertain an audience. And they’re so photogenic. You can find the link to the whole concert and photos of the show at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

On Something Blue this week we’ll feature some more songs from this show including one sung by Maja.

Ok now, here’s The Shugga Shane Band recorded at Blues Fest on September 20, 2009, doing “I Don’t Want to Be”.

From The Archives Of Something Blue May 15, 2022

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a song I wrote, recorded right here in Northeast Arkansas.

On April 6, 2013, NJHB played their fourth performance at TheArts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. NJHB performances are more like an event then a rehearsed band with a different set of musicians at every show playing all original songs often with new charts put up on the music stands for their first performance.

At the show we had guest star, Chris “Stinger” Stevens, on guitar. Also playing were Mike “Zif” Lovell – guitar, Carl Abraham – drums, and Hairy Larry – piano, all from the Jonesboro area except for Chris who travelled in for the show.

On that night we had no bass and no horns but we soldiered on and played our show with half a band.

When listening to the recordings I loved the sound, especially the guitar work by Stevens and Lovell. So I mixed the songs to what is called a stub and then I wrote overdub scripts for bass and sax. Two of my friends agreed to come to my studio to play the overdubs and so I got Corey Emerson on bass and Cody Ballard on tenor sax.

So this song was recorded at TheArts@311 and at HairyLarryLand. Corey and Cody are such excellent musicians that they nailed everything first take. If you listen carefully sometimes it sounds like the guitars are answering the sax when, of course, the sax was recorded after the guitars.

So now, from the NJHB “Stinger” album here’s a song I wrote called “Mosaic”.
