Thanks Marty, This week we’re hearing El Bujo recorded live at Jazz Thursday.

Gary Gazaway brought The El Bujo Project to KASU Jazz Thursday held in TheArts@311 on June 27, 2013, and it’s one of the best Jazz Thursday shows I ever recorded for Something Blue.

For today I picked a song Gary wrote called “The Phoenicians”. Introducing the song Gary said that he wrote it for Robert Palmer who was a famous writer and journalist and also an Arkansas musician.

“The Phoenicians” is performed in a contemporary jazz style. Just listen to Gary’s trumpet soar over his tight band.

So, here we go. Here’s Gary Gazaway and the El Bujo Project playing “The Phoenicians”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Bebop Beatniks playing “In The Zone”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks
2. Something Blue – Simplicity – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing an original song recorded at the HairyLarryLand Studio.

Starting as a duo and then a trio Bebop Beatniks kept adding musicians until it became a sextet. When we recorded our album, “Leaves” resident Beatniks were Tyler Remagen, sax and flute; Sid Davis, trumpet; Emily Lindley, vibes; Alex Washam, drums; Paul Nunis, bass and vocals; and Hairy Larry, piano and vocals. Every one of us lives in Northeast Arkansas and we were all students in the ASU jazz program except for Paul, who is on the faculty.

The album includes one standard, a song by Sid Davis, a song by Paul Nunis, and three songs that I wrote. Today we’ll hear one of mine that I titled “In The Zone”.

We also played “In The Zone” at the Delta Jazz Workshop and after we finished I asked if anyone figured out where I got the title. The closest I got was Auto Zone. Actually, I called it “In The Zone” because of the da da da da, da da da da riff that I lifted from The Twilight Zone.

Bebop Beatniks has always been a live band so this was our first studio recording. I set up close mics and multitracked the recording but we still played the pieces just like we do live. A technique I call live in the studio. It’s hard for a performing band like Bebop Beatniks to do overdubs and still retain their cohesive sound. If you’re a band that performs live you will get your best sound playing live in the studio.

Ok now, here’s Bebop Beatniks playing my song, “In The Zone”, from our album, “Leaves” recorded in 2018 at HairyLarryLand.

DJ Hairy Larry presents The John T. Parks playing “New Orleans Girl”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry Presents John T. Parks
2. Something Blue – Jive – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a New Orleans song by an Arkansas songwriter.

John T. Parks has played for KASU many times, usually playing in a full band. But he also plays solo and duo acoustic sets so it was great to get to record him at the KASU Coffeehouse held at The Arts@311 in downtown Jonesboro.

He lives in Batesville, Arkansas. Besides playing guitar, piano, and singing he is also an outstanding songwriter writing all styles from the blues to country music. He has released several singer songwriter albums that are popular on Arkansas Roots. Today we’re going to hear a song he wrote in the New Orleans style that is reminiscent of some songs by The Band.

So here he is now, John T. Parks recorded live at the KASU Coffeehouse on November 11, 2014, singing his own song, “New Orleans Girl”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents The Steve Davis Trio playing “There Will Never Be Another You”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Steve Davis Trio
2. Something Blue – Fisherman – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, this week we’re hearing a jazz standard recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

Matt Jackson played bass in NJHB, the New Jazz House Band, for New Jazz In Jonesboro. He also played with us at the bandshell and at my Senior Recital.

Like many talented bass players he played in more that one band. So when I started booking Jazz Thursday for KASU he mentioned that he also played in the Steve Davis Trio. I was happy to get them on board.

Both Matt Jackson and Steve Davis are from Southern Missouri. Matt attended school at ASU where he played in Tom O’Connor’s big band. Of course Matt also performed regularly in Jonesboro with NJHB and Steve and Matt both played at KASU Jazz Thursday.

As you will hear Steve Davis is an amazing guitarist focusing mostly on jazz standards. Matt Jackson is also featured with a fantastic bass solo. I recorded them on March 28, 2013, at the Arts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. Here they are now playing a jazz classic, “There Will Never Be Another You”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians playing “Alberta”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians
2. Something Blue – Ships 29 second spot

Thanks Marty. This week we’ll hear Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians live at Blues Fest.

Hairy Larry and the Flying Hungarians began recording and playing in Northeast Arkansas in the eighties. We were the host band at the first Blues Fest in 1991.

On September 18, 2005, we were back for the fifteenth time. It had become quite a tradition. The Flying Hungarians are a family band. In 2005 I was on guitar and harmonica, Carl Heyl on bass, Kier Heyl on percussion, and Randy Gambill on drums. There are guests later in the set including an appearance of The Divas. I’ll include a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Of course we always did Dylan songs and early in the set I did “Alberta” from the “Self Portrait” album. But Bob Dylan didn’t write “Alberta”. It was first published in 1944 by Mary Wheeler, in “Steamboatin’ Days: Folk Songs of the River Packet Era”. “Alberta” is a song she collected from Gabriel “Uncle Gabe” Hester.

The other interesting thing about these recordings is that they were recorded direct to the hard drive of a PC. I had an extension cord strung out to my van where I had a PC, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Between sets I would stop recording and then restart for the next set.

Now, here’s “Alberta”, performed by Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on September 18, 2005.
