DJ Hairy Larry presents The Steve Davis Trio playing “There Will Never Be Another You”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Steve Davis Trio
2. Something Blue – Fisherman – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, this week we’re hearing a jazz standard recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

Matt Jackson played bass in NJHB, the New Jazz House Band, for New Jazz In Jonesboro. He also played with us at the bandshell and at my Senior Recital.

Like many talented bass players he played in more that one band. So when I started booking Jazz Thursday for KASU he mentioned that he also played in the Steve Davis Trio. I was happy to get them on board.

Both Matt Jackson and Steve Davis are from Southern Missouri. Matt attended school at ASU where he played in Tom O’Connor’s big band. Of course Matt also performed regularly in Jonesboro with NJHB and Steve and Matt both played at KASU Jazz Thursday.

As you will hear Steve Davis is an amazing guitarist focusing mostly on jazz standards. Matt Jackson is also featured with a fantastic bass solo. I recorded them on March 28, 2013, at the Arts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. Here they are now playing a jazz classic, “There Will Never Be Another You”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians playing “Alberta”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians
2. Something Blue – Ships 29 second spot

Thanks Marty. This week we’ll hear Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians live at Blues Fest.

Hairy Larry and the Flying Hungarians began recording and playing in Northeast Arkansas in the eighties. We were the host band at the first Blues Fest in 1991.

On September 18, 2005, we were back for the fifteenth time. It had become quite a tradition. The Flying Hungarians are a family band. In 2005 I was on guitar and harmonica, Carl Heyl on bass, Kier Heyl on percussion, and Randy Gambill on drums. There are guests later in the set including an appearance of The Divas. I’ll include a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Of course we always did Dylan songs and early in the set I did “Alberta” from the “Self Portrait” album. But Bob Dylan didn’t write “Alberta”. It was first published in 1944 by Mary Wheeler, in “Steamboatin’ Days: Folk Songs of the River Packet Era”. “Alberta” is a song she collected from Gabriel “Uncle Gabe” Hester.

The other interesting thing about these recordings is that they were recorded direct to the hard drive of a PC. I had an extension cord strung out to my van where I had a PC, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Between sets I would stop recording and then restart for the next set.

Now, here’s “Alberta”, performed by Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on September 18, 2005.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Aaron Love and His TV Band playing “The Thrill Is Gone”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Aaron Love and His TV Band
2. Something Blue – Shake 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re listening to a blues classic sung by a band from right here in Jonesboro.

I called Aaron Love The Jonesboro Blues Man and we had a long musical history starting at Blues Fest and continuing through the production of the “Aaron Love and His TV Band” album.

Joe Lee turned me on to Aaron Love when I started booking Blues Fest. Joe released Aaron’s hit, “I’m Coming Down Mama” on Alley before I knew either of them. Joe and I played with Aaron at the first Blues Fest in 1991.

Aaron became a regular performer at Blues Alley in Jonesboro and then I put together a band to promote Aaron’s unique blues vocal style. We had two lead vocalists, Aaron Love and Pansy Hall, my son, Uldis, and I played guitar, Richard Stevens was on bass and Donald Deloach, drums. All of the musicians are from Jonesboro and they all played together weekly at Blues Alley.

All of the instrumentalists in the band played multiple instruments so that gave us a lot of flexibility when it came time to record our album.

Eric Crewes also helped us with Blues Fest and he engineered the album at Soundworks, located at the weird 5 way stop in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Aaron loved B.B. King and we worked up a special arrangement on “The Thrill Is Gone” with both Aaron and Pansy singing. Pansy said, “It doesn’t have to be a man singing ‘The Thrill Is Gone’. Sometimes the thrill is gone for the woman too.”

Plus we got Richard Stevens to overdub flute on the song which works particularly well, jazz flute over a blues standard.

So now, recorded at Soundworks in Jonesboro, Arkansas, here’s Aaron Love and His TV Band singing “The Thrill Is Gone”.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Jazz Writers Big Band playing “More Better Days Than Yesterday”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Jazz Writers Big Band
2. Something Blue – Invitation 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today I’ve got a jazz original performed at Riceland Hall right here at ASU.

First off what’s an EWI? EWI is an acronym for Electronic Wind Instrument and it’s a horn played kind of like a clarinet but with synthesizer output. So besides keyboard synths and guitar synths there are horn synths named EWI.

Dr. Ken Carroll is Director of Jazz Studies at ASU and he plays EWI. So, when we get around to playing the piece and you’re wondering what horn is playing that solo?, it’s an EWI.

When I first took classes in the Music Department Tom O’Connor was director of the big bands and I played guitar and bass under his supervision. So when he started the Jazz Writers Big Band I recorded them whenever possible.

On July 9, 2018, Jazz Writer’s Big Band was playing at Riceland Hall as part of the ASU Delta Jazz Workshop administered by Dr. Ken Carroll. I was recording each evening during the workshop. The band sounded great. They played some standards arranged by Tom O’Connor but mostly originals by Joseph Curtis or Tom O’Connor.

So, coming up now, recorded July 9, 2018 here’s “More Better Days Than Yesterday”, an original composition by Dr. Tom O’Connor.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Vikki McGee singing “I’d Rather Be Blind”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Vikki Mcgee
2. Something Blue – Blister 29 second spot

Thanks Marty. Today we’re hearing a classic blues song delivered at a KASU Bluesday Tuesday by a Jonesboro musician.

Vikki McGee is a bandleader and a songwriter. She sings all styles of music but today we’re featuring her blues vocals on a song written by Ellington Jordan and Etta James.

Vikki has played at many KASU events including the Johnny Cash Heritage Festival and the Arkansas Roots Festival. She also performed on campus as the Guest Artist with the Delta Symphony Orchestra. Before she did any of that she played at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on February 12, 2013.

It was a great show with a full band including keyboards and electric guitar. Her set included songs by The Band, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Bill Withers but I picked this Etta James song because of the way she nails the vocals and because of the fantastic interplay between voice and guitar at the end of the song.

So here’s Vikki McGee at KASU Bluesday Tuesday singing the Etta James song, “I’d Rather Be Blind”.
