Delta Legends

Thanks Marty, today we’ve got some Arkansas blues recorded at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena Arkansas.

Before the pandemic I made the trip to The Biscuit every October. I love the whole scene, the street music, the main stage, and Fireman’s Campground where I would jam with my friends all night long. I played with two bands, The Emporium Orkestra and Delta Legends. In 2018 The Emporium Orkestra played at the Downtown Bar and Grill Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings and Delta Legends played on the Cedell Davis stage Friday evening. Closing our set we invited members of the Emporium Orkestra up to join us.

Rhode Island Red and Pinky Lee are not from Arkansas. But they do play in Arkansas every year. The Delta Legends are John Shepherd, Jeremy Burnett, and myself. We all live in Arkansas. And there’s one more tie to Arkansas. The song we’re playing is by Washboard Sam who was from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.

So now, here’s Delta Legends joined by guest legends Rhode Island Red and Pinky Lee doing the Washboard Sam song, “Diggin’ My Potatos”.

1. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Tim Moore playing “Funky Palisades”
2. Something Blue – Mystery – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear just what ASU jazz students can do at Jazz Thursday.

Tim Moore played trumpet and piano at ASU before he migrated south to North Texas State. While at ASU he was bandleader for Caprice coproducing their fantastic album, “From Dawn Til Dusk”.

He stayed in touch after he left Jonesboro and I was able to book him for a few dates at KASU Jazz Thursday. On May 15, 2014, he organized a group of ASU students to play with him and it was a great show. Tim was on piano and he filled out the rhythm section with Caprice alumni; Alex Ditto, guitar; Matt Bounds, bass; and Addison Boling on drums. Then he added a full horn section with Clinton Curtis on alto, Cody Ballard, tenor; Kevin Tinker and Matt Penny, trumpet; and Seth Wortham, trombone.

Needless to say with that full rhythm section and five horns there was a lot of sound going down.

So now, recorded on May 15, 2014, at Jazz Thursday here’s Tim Moore and his band playing the Everette Harp song, “Funky Palisades”.

Thanks Marty. Today we’ll hear some chill jazz piano recorded at the HairyLarryLand Twitch Studio.

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love live music, both from in the audience and from on stage. The last couple of years have been hard for musicians and the thing I missed most was gigging.

Then my daughter, Megan, started a twitch stream and I got interested in what twitch offered to musicians as well as to gamers. So I set up a twitch studio and I started playing live on twitch, three days a week.

Then my granddaughter, Liz, started streaming games too, so now we have three generations of twitch streamers in the family.

Now twitch streamers tend to fall into two camps, high energy and chill. Of course, there’s everything in between and not just music and gaming either. But my stream is chill jazz piano.

I built my book by writing new pieces and selecting some gems from the past and I now have fifteen songs in my stream repertoire. I am taking a jazz arranging lesson at ASU this fall, working on horn parts for these fifteen songs. So, when the delta variant wanes, and we are once again able to safely stream from the twitch porch, I will be ready for the horn players.

As I was setting up my studio I started writing blog posts about it and that project kept getting bigger and now I have just a few chapters left to write in my book, “Setting Up A Twitch Studio, Using Tech Creatively”. When the book is done it will be available for free download as a pdf on the internet. The blog posts are available now.

I’ve always been a day job musician playing out several times a month. I recommend this to musicians who want to play for the joy of it without having to make a living from music. But now, thanks to the internet, I can gig three days a week and never leave the house.

For links visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Ok now, here I am playing a song I wrote in 2018 and recorded just last week, “Blue Goose”.

Thanks Marty, today we’ll hear an original jazz song played by a big band right here at ASU.

The Jazz Writers Big Band is different than most big bands. They write all their own charts. Whether it’s an arrangement of a standard or an original song the notes are put on the page by someone in the band.

On July 6, 2017, the Jazz Writers Big Band was playing for the Delta Jazz Workshop In Riceland Hall at The Fowler Center. As always they included original songs in their show, something I always look forward to. I love jazz standards but to hear an original chart written by a friend of mine really gets me, if you can dig it.

Joseph Curtis is the band director at Trumann, Arkansas. I’ve played with him in several bands including NJHB and Bebop Beatniks. He has also written many great songs that have been performed by the Jazz Writers Big Band.

One of those songs, called “Devotional”, really reaches deep down expressing awe and wonder. Sometimes it’s hard to understand when musicians talk about the message of an instrumental piece. “Devotional” has a message.

Now, here’s the Jazz Writers Big Band recorded July 6, 2017, playing the Joseph Curtis song, “Devotional”.

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a fantastic version of a jazz standard recorded at Jazz Thursday.

I booked Jazz Thursday at TheArts@311 and other Jonesboro venues for several years working with KASU on publicity and funding. We enjoyed a lot of great shows featuring an opening act and then The Little Big Band or The Adhoc Combo hosting a jam session.

On May 23, 2013, we heard a well known Jonesboro jazz band, Giant Steps, featuring Craig Baker on trumpet; Michael McGowan, tenor; Joy Sanford, piano; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. All seasoned musicians with years of stage performance behind them, they really stepped up and everyone enjoyed their set of jazz standards.

All of the musicians except Michael McGowan have played in Northeast Arkansas for their entire career. McGowan lived in Jonesboro for several years, playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band. Then he moved to Texas to teach music. Recently he returned to Jonesboro to attend the Delta Jazz Workshop and he played with Bebop Beatniks on our Wednesday night show.

Here’s Giant Steps now, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday, on May 23, 2013, playing “Lullaby Of Birdland”.
