Thanks Marty, today we’ll hear an original jazz song played by a big band right here at ASU.

The Jazz Writers Big Band is different than most big bands. They write all their own charts. Whether it’s an arrangement of a standard or an original song the notes are put on the page by someone in the band.

On July 6, 2017, the Jazz Writers Big Band was playing for the Delta Jazz Workshop In Riceland Hall at The Fowler Center. As always they included original songs in their show, something I always look forward to. I love jazz standards but to hear an original chart written by a friend of mine really gets me, if you can dig it.

Joseph Curtis is the band director at Trumann, Arkansas. I’ve played with him in several bands including NJHB and Bebop Beatniks. He has also written many great songs that have been performed by the Jazz Writers Big Band.

One of those songs, called “Devotional”, really reaches deep down expressing awe and wonder. Sometimes it’s hard to understand when musicians talk about the message of an instrumental piece. “Devotional” has a message.

Now, here’s the Jazz Writers Big Band recorded July 6, 2017, playing the Joseph Curtis song, “Devotional”.

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a fantastic version of a jazz standard recorded at Jazz Thursday.

I booked Jazz Thursday at TheArts@311 and other Jonesboro venues for several years working with KASU on publicity and funding. We enjoyed a lot of great shows featuring an opening act and then The Little Big Band or The Adhoc Combo hosting a jam session.

On May 23, 2013, we heard a well known Jonesboro jazz band, Giant Steps, featuring Craig Baker on trumpet; Michael McGowan, tenor; Joy Sanford, piano; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. All seasoned musicians with years of stage performance behind them, they really stepped up and everyone enjoyed their set of jazz standards.

All of the musicians except Michael McGowan have played in Northeast Arkansas for their entire career. McGowan lived in Jonesboro for several years, playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band. Then he moved to Texas to teach music. Recently he returned to Jonesboro to attend the Delta Jazz Workshop and he played with Bebop Beatniks on our Wednesday night show.

Here’s Giant Steps now, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday, on May 23, 2013, playing “Lullaby Of Birdland”.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a song I wrote recorded at the HairyLarryLand studio.

It was October 20, 2014, and the Count Basie Big Band was scheduled to perform at The Fowler. Of course Count Basie died in 1984 but his band lives on entertaining audiences with the original Count Basie sound still playing the same arrangements that everyone danced to in the not so distant past.

I was there early and I had an hour to kill so, of course, I hit the practice rooms. And in that hour I wrote a song, a sixteen bar blues I called “Waitin’ For Basie”. And then I went and enjoyed the show along with a sizable audience some of whom had actually heard Count Basie play these same songs.

In November I scheduled a session at HairyLarryLand and we recorded “Waitin’ For Basie” and three other songs. Playing on the session were Carl Holden – guitar, Matt Bounds – bass, Brian “Stickman” Hickman – drums, and I’m on piano.

Arkansas Roots listeners have heard Matt Bounds play bass many times because he was the bass player on the Caprice album.

We had a blast playing these songs and I was pleased with the recordings. The whole session is available on the Live Music Archive, I’ll include a link at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

Ok now, here we are, recorded November 9, 2014, playing “Waitin’ For Basie”.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some fine jazz recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

Before the pandemic the Jazz Department would host the Delta Jazz Workshop in the music building every July. Jazz students of all ages are eligible to attend but the enrolees are predominantly high school students interested in taking jazz at ASU.

Jay Shepherd and I would work together teaching jazz improvisation and one of the things I hate most about the pandemic is missing my week working and playing with Jay.

Besides teaching workshops and rehearsing ensembles all day long the Delta Jazz Workshop also put on a mini jazz festival with live jazz concerts each night for the attendees and open to the public. Besides working with the students I also recorded all the concerts and many of these recordings have been featured on Something Blue.

Jay Shepherd brought his jazz band on July 12, 2016, and they played a great show.

Playing with Jay that night were Tyler Washam, piano; Shane Chastain, piano; Terrell Montgomery, bass; and Keyven Dunn, drums. Jay was bandleader and he played guitar. All these musicians are from this area and most were ASU students at the time.

OK now, here’s Jay Shepherd playing the Chick Corea standard, “Spain”.

Guy Venable and Eric Hughes at KASU Bluesday Tuesday

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some Jug Band Music recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.

On February 8, 2011 Eric Hughes and Guy Venable gave us a great show playing blues, country, folk and jug band. Jug band music has been one of my favorite styles since the sixties when I used to listen to Jim Kweskin with Maria Muldaur. Eric and Guy didn’t let me down.

I met Guy Venable when he came to Blues Fest one year and I’m not really sure when I met Eric Hughes but it was before 2011 so I was primed for the event. They are both fine outstanding musicians so I had no worries. They laid down a great show, start to finish, and it remains a pearl in my collection.

Eric worked with me after the show too and created an account at the Live Music Archive where I uploaded the entire concert. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for a link or just go to archive.org and search on Eric Hughes.

I play in a Jug Band, the Emporium Orkestra, and I always love it when I hear someone else singing one of the songs we love to play. So, here we go with Eric Hughes and Guy Venable playing “That’ll Never Happen No More”.
